Note- This story takes place before "We've Got Your Back" from my previous book of oneshots.

Wilbur POV

Offline.

Wilbur sighed, shaking his head slightly at the dormant icon. How long had it been? Weeks? A month? Wilbur couldn't remember the last time the two of them had even chatted. Leaning back in his chair, a bad feeling began pooling in his chest. Had it really been that long?

The brunette pulled out his phone, scrolling through his messages. Three weeks. That's how long it had been. Wilbur couldn't help but feel a bit guilty. He thought back to his lowest points, the nights where Tommy wouldn't leave him alone. It was obnoxious at first with the blonde calling him every single day.

"Come talk to me!" he would text, adding too many exclamation points to count. If Wilbur didn't respond within the hour, he would text again. "Stop ignoring me!" Wilbur quickly discovered that ignoring the boy was not an option.

After hours upon hours of demands, he would finally respond with a simple "Fine". This would lead to their long discord calls, usually lasting all day. As much as Wilbur complained about "being forced to talk to the child", he eventually grew to love their calls. It was during these hours that they grew so close.

Frowning slightly, Wilbur could feel the guilt once more. He should have been there for Tommy, the way that Tommy was for him. The blonde wouldn't have forgotten, and yet he had.

Wilbur was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't notice the new icon that popped up on his screen. His heart leaped at the chance of it being Tommy, but one quick glance and he felt the disappointment.

"Hey Dream," he tried to sound cheerful.

"Hey Wil." Dream sounded as guilty as he felt. "Have you talked to Tommy recently?" The question was sudden, but not unexpected.

"You noticed too," he commented, sighing, "No, I've spoken to him in a month."

Silence.

A loud groan came from Dream, likely running his hands through his hair in panic. "I feel so awful! I meant to call Tommy, just to check up on him after he moved. But I just got so busy with the manhunts and my new music I-"

"It's okay, I'm guilty of it too." Wilbur cut him off. His eyes drifted towards the mix of photos stuck to his corkboard. Most of them had Tommy, grinning ear to ear like he always did. A photo from the first day they met in person. A photo of the day Tommy pranked him by taking over his stream. A photo of the night before he moved, the last time he saw him. Grabbing the photo, he ran a finger along the edge of the picture. "I can't believe I forgot to check on him," he murmured.

Tommy was crying in the picture, hugging Wilbur like his life depended on it. "I don't want to move, Wil! I don't want to leave you!" Though he hadn't told the brunette his reasons for moving, Wilbur knew he was scared. After several attempts to ask what was bothering him, he had given up, knowing the boy would tell him when he was ready.

Wilbur held him close. "I'm only a call away," he reassured. Tommy's grip only tightened. Thinking harder, he added, "I'll check up on you, how about that?"

Blue eyes met his, as though trying to decide if he were lying or not. "Really?"

"Of course! I have to return the favor after you helped me through my tough times." he ruffled the boy's hair, making him laugh. "If I could move with you I would."

Tommy sighed, finally relaxing a little. "Thanks Wil." He picking at his fingernails, something Wilbur had noticed him doing more and more frequently. Tommy had never been one to let his nerves get the better of him. So why was he panicking?

"You know you can tell me anything Toms, right?"

He nodded, smiling slightly. "I'm fine Wil. Stop worrying." Even his smile seemed to reflect his panic.

But Wilbur nodded and took a step back. If Tommy said he was fine then obviously he was.

Wilbur just wished he could believe that.

"I broke my promise." Wilbur said blankly, wiping his glass eyes on his sleeve. "I told him I would be there."

Dream hummed, "Let's call him now then."

Wilbur put the picture aside, quickly creating a new group within discord. He added Dream and Tommy before quickly switching the call to the new group. Dream joined immediately without saying anything.

They waited each minute silently, both staring at the ringing icon.

But Tommy's icon never awakened, continuing to exist in its slumbering state.
