Tommy POV

Tommy awoke to the sound of squeaking. Cracking one eye open, he jumped out of his skin. The rat that had previously been on his chest scurried away. The blonde watched the tail disappear deeper into the garbage. Taking a deep breath, he looked around slowly.

He was weak, weaker than he had ever felt before. Just lifting his arm a few inches above the ground sent waves of pain through his body. Shifting his body, Tommy tried to find a more comfortable position. But it was impossible. Every movement brought tears to his eyes.

Tommy finally gave up, accepting his fate. He wouldn't be able to climb out of here, let alone walk all the way home. Wilbur was his only hope.

The stench of the garbage surrounding him made its way towards his nose, making his entire face scrunch up. Tommy wanted nothing more than to pinch his nose, to get away from this horrible stink. But even that task was just too painful.

Tommy sat there for what felt like hours, fighting sleep as much as he could. He feared that if he were to allow the darkness to take him, he would never open his eyes again. It was better to wait in pain.

At least that's what he told himself.

"I got it Mom!" a voice made him freeze. Footsteps stalked towards the dumpster, dragging something behind them. "You don't have to yell at me..." the figure mumbled. There was a pause as Tommy waited in anticipation.

Then his world was filled with light. The lid to the dumpster flew open as two fingers crept over the edge. Tommy bit his lip, not sure what to hope for. As dangerous as the thought was, he desperately wanted help. And any hope of getting out of this disgusting dumpster was a hope he would take.

Tommy was about to open his mouth when a huge black bag landed directly on top of him. "Ouch!" he grunted, immediately working to shift the weight off of him.

"Is someone in there?" the figure called out, attempting to lean over the side.

"Help," he mumbled, feeling the pain intensify.

The stranger didn't hesitate to climb into the dumpster. "Don't worry! I'll get you out!" He finally caught sight of the figure, surprised to find a girl only a little older than him. Brushing her blonde hair out of her face, she made her way towards him. "I'll get this off you in no time!" she reassured. Grabbing the black bag with all her might, it took her only a minute to cast it aside. It was then that she finally got a good look at him. "What the hell happened to you?"

He laughed, "It's uh... not as bad as it seems."

"Don't lie to me," her blue eyes filled with worry. "We need to get you to the hospital." She knelt forward to help him up, but he quickly pushed her away.

"No! No hospitals."

The girl raised an eyebrow, "Why not?"

He shook his head, "That will only make everything worse." His eyes pointed to the torn mask in his hand. Then the humiliation would never leave him. And that was nothing something Tommy was willing to bear anymore than he had to.

"Your-"

"Tommy, just call me Tommy."

She paused before nodding. "Well I'm Niki." Running a hand through her hair, she pulled out a few scraps of food, not thinking much of it. "I can't just leave you here, Tommy."

Propping himself up to the best of his ability, he offered, "Take me home."

"You look like you're in no position to walk!" she pointed out.

"Please," he begged. "My brother is the only one who can help me."

Tommy could see the conflict in her eyes. Biting her lip, she finally agreed. "Fine, I'll get you to your brother."

He smiled, feeling a new surge of energy. There was hope. He might actually live to see another day. Moving slowly, he attempted to climb to feet. Niki helped him up, never looking confident in any sense.

He didn't blame her one bit. He didn't need to look at the blood on his clothes to know just how bad it truly was.

Glazing lazily towards the stars, Tommy made a promise to himself as well as his brother. He was going to make it. No matter how long it took, Tommy was going to live to see another day.
