Techno POV

Techno threw his bag over his shoulder, taking one final look around before finding the courage to walk out. It would be the final time he was in that little room. And that, he was grateful for. Glancing over his shoulder, he took a deep breath. Act natural, he thought. Just one foot in front of the other.

"Hey Techno! What are you doing up so late?"

The pinkette froze, his mind racing a million times a minute. They caught him. What was he going to do now? They would bring him to- Relief spread through his veins as his eyes landed on his old friend. Sighing, he couldn't help but glare, "Do you have to scare me like that? You know how dangerous this is!"

The man laughed, "I thought you said that wasn't possible. Nothing scares the Blade."

Techno rolled his eyes in response, "Don't get used to it."

Phil chuckled before leading the way through the base. The duo walked past the dark windows, hoping by some miracles that they remained dark. The faster they walked, the better. It was strange to be in the streets at the dead of night. It was so quiet... Maybe even peaceful. Glazing at his passing reflection in the windows, Techno couldn't help but think aloud. "Do you think they'll notice our absence?"

"No," Phil replied without hesitation. "Dream doesn't about anything beyond his enemy. He barely even knows we exist."

"But what if he comes after us?"

"Well, we're prepared for that." Phil indicated towards the sword on his belt.

"If something happens-"

"Tech, since when were you the worrier?" the blonde glanced at him in amusement. But upon seeing Techno's stress, he added, "You know Puffy will take us in without hesitation. Besides, she's the one who offered an escape in the first place. She'll have no problem escaping Dream's wrath. After all, she does have the fastest ship in all the seas." He placed a comforting hand on the younger's shoulder. "Everything will be fine, I promise. In a few hours this will all be a memory."

"More like a nightmare."

Phil didn't have to say anything for Techno to understand he agreed. Things had changed so much since when they first arrived. It was once a welcoming place filled with the kindest community Techno had ever met. The pinkette was welcomed in when he had no where else to go. It felt like he was a part of something for the first time in his life. And that was before he met Phil.

Phil had come a few months after him, seeking the same thing Techno was. A home. And they were lucky enough to find it in each other. When everything changed, they quickly came to realization that they could only depend on one another. So when Phil felt that their lives were in more danger than worth the risk, he came up with the plan of escaping. Techno didn't hesitate to follow, but he couldn't help but worry.

The two of them found their ways towards the edge of the base. Phil took a step outside the boundaries while Techno hesitated. He couldn't help but look back towards the place they once called home. "Do you think this will really be the last time we see this place?"

"I hope so," Phil placed a hand on the younger's shoulder.

Without another moment passing, the duo began their journey through the woods. Silence passed through the night, softening the crickets and the crinkling of leaves. It was peaceful, much like where they came from, but this time peace came without the eeriness. For the time being, they thought nothing could stop them from reaching the freedom they desired. But fate had a different plan.

Gunshots made both of them freeze. Instantly they were both on the ground, their hands covering their ears. Phil cursed under his breath, "The forest was supposed to take us away from the battlefield!"

"What map were you looking at? Because clearly we're right next to it!" Techno muttered under his breath, squinting past the trees. He could just barely catch a glimpse of soldiers between the leaves, attacking each other with wild eyes.

Phil groaned, running a hand through his hair. "They must have advanced! I didn't think that was possible with Dream's forces..."

"We need to get out of here!" Techno scattered to his feet, pulling Phil with him. His grip tightened on Phil's sleeve as he ran, just the thought of losing his friend was enough to terrify him. But just as quickly as they began running, they skidded to a halt.

"DON'T DO THAT!" a scream chilled Techno to the bone. He stared at Phil with wide eyes. Whoever was screaming seemed too close to death for comfort. The two of them crawled forward, peeking through the leaves.

"I have to Toms, I'm sorry-" Techno froze as he caught sight of the voices. They were only kids, a little younger than himself.

"Please!" the younger screamed. The pinkette gasped at the sight of blood. He was wounded.

"Tommy-" Phil stepped forward, a twig snapping. Instantly Techno jumped up, stepping in front of his friend protectively.

"Phil... We're not alone..."

The older rolled his eyes, "I'm not blind Techno." He was about to approach the brunette, when the boy jumped up, pulling a pistol. "Woah, woah," Phil held his hands up in surrender.

Techno studied the boy carefully, immediately taking note of his shaking hands. His eyes wide, he realized the boy was terrified even more than they were.

"Not a step closer or I'll-I'll shoot!" he shouted.

"Calm down kid. We just want to help-" Phil began.

"We don't want your help! We don't need-"

Tommy screamed again, beginning to gasp as he tried to breathe. Techno rolled his eyes, "You're brother says otherwise." He walked forward, ignoring the brunette completely.

"Don't come any closer-"

"You won't shoot me. Trust me," Techno met his eyes, attempting to look gentle.

Phil followed behind, quickly kneeling beside the injured boy. "We can help you. We know a place-"

"What if-"

"Do you have any better options?"

Techno's question made the boy reconsider. Slowly, he lowered the gun before putting it away. While it was out of sight, it was not out of mind. "Can you really save him?" his voice was soft, no longer defensive.

"If we hurry..." Phil carefully picked Tommy up bridal style, holding him protectively. He took off quickly, attempting to keep the boy from feeling any more pain, but that seemed impossible. With every twist and turn, Tommy cried out, feeling more and more faint.

Techno and the boy could hardly keep up. With every step, the brunette seemed to grow more and more panicked.

"Everything will be fine, kid." Techno attempted to reassure.

"Your brother isn't bleeding to death." the boy grumbled. "And don't call me kid. I'm not a kid!"

"You are younger than me," the pinkette pointed out. He looked ahead, just to make sure they were still shadowing Phil.

"It's Wilbur, okay? Not kid."

Techno nodded, "Fair enough. The name's Techno."

"That's a weird name."

"Okay kid."

"Okay sorry! Sorry!" Wilbur apologized. "Just please don't call me that." The pair continued to run, slowly coming upon a river.

Relief filled Techno, he could already see Puffy's ship. Glancing at Wilbur, he smiled, "You're brother might just make it."

"Might!?!"
