Note this takes place before "We've Got Your Back" from my previous oneshot book.
Techno POV
Techno didn't answer his phone on the first ring. He didn't hear the third, fourth, or six ring either. Not because he was sleeping or actually didn't hear his phone. No, it was because he didn't want to deal with people.
It was nearly two in the morning. Whoever was calling him could wait until morning. Turning back to his favorite book, The Princess Bride, he continued to ignore it. They would have to stop calling eventually.
Whoever was on the other side of the call was set on proving him wrong. They continued to call, only allowing for silence in between each call. Three or four pages later and his phone would be ringing. Techno buried himself further under his blankets, set on being a vampire. Who on earth was trying to reach him this late? If they truly knew him, he was sure they were aware that he never answered phone calls, let alone this late.
His phone went dark, allowing for just a sliver of hope. Maybe he was finally going to be left alone. Again his eyes fell back on his beloved book, rereading the words where he had been interrupted. Just one more page, he pleaded. His plea fell on deaf ears as his phone ignited once more.
Glaring at the stupid light, Techno could feel his blood begin to boil.
Fine.
He was done.
Clutching the phone angrily, he rubbed his eyes before attempting to read the caller ID.
Wilbur- 7 missed calls
Techno glared at the name. Wilbur. Wilbur was the one who was interrupting his reading. Without a second thought, he answered the call, prepared to give the brunette a piece of his mind.
"This better be important," he growled, his grip on the phone tightening.
"Techno! Why didn't you answer the first seven times I called?" his voice was raspy, filled with guilt. Oh God, what happened? Techno pinched the bridge of his nose. He wasn't sure he even wanted to know.
"Wilbur, do you know what time it is for me?"
There was a pause. That was all Techno needed for an answer.
"It's... It's only two in the morning!" Wilbur exclaimed. "You and I both know you weren't sleeping."
"No, but I was reading!" Techno rolled his eyes. "And you felt the need to disrupt that precious time. And now I'm missing-"
"Have you talked to Tommy since he moved?" It was Techno's turn to fall silent. Tommy had moved? How could he not be aware of that? Tommy was always claiming to be one of Techno's closest friends. The kid that completed the Sleepy Boys Inc. So how could he not tell him something so important?
Techno ran through every conversation he had had with the boy in the past month. He couldn't help but panic at the realization of how long it had been. Sure, he hadn't been on the SMP in a while, but he must have talked to him behind the scenes, right? But the more he thought about it, the less sure he was. "That child didn't even tell me he was moving," he muttered, glaring a hole through his black monitor.
"He hasn't hung out with you at all?!" Alarm filled Wilbur's voice. "With you two being so close, I figured you would have talked to him recently."
"And I thought he would have told me he was moving!" Techno shouted, surprising himself with the rage he felt. "I'm assuming you were the first one he told," he snarled. Wasn't he supposed to be Tommy's friend? Wasn't his friendship important?
"I don't know if I was the first, but I saw him the night before he moved. He was moving to the US." Wilbur sighed, "Sorry, Tech. I thought you knew."
Techno leaned back in his chair, taking a deep breath. Tommy's choices had nothing to do with Wilbur, he reminded himself. But that didn't make it hurt any less. "Why was he moving? I thought he loved in Brighton."
"That's the thing, he wouldn't tell me. He just kept saying it wasn't important and that I didn't need to worry."
"Tommy always was a terrible liar," he commented, thinking back to all the attempted pranks and dares over the years. His chat was constantly daring him to call his friends and shout random things, often acting like he didn't care about being friends with them. But Tommy could never do it. In his words, "he was too much a big man to lie". When really, he was just couldn't help but tell the truth. Anything else would leave him guilty.
"I was supposed to call him..." Wilbur's voice trailed off. "I got so caught up in everything, I just-"
"Forgot?" Techno finished his sentence. Closing his eyes, he sighed, "I'm guilty of that too." Techno had never been good at keeping up with people, months of disappearing from the Internet were proof of that. But that didn't mean that he didn't at least try to be there for his friends. Especially when they were facing something tough.
"He won't answer any of my calls, Tech. I'm really worried about him." He could hear the panic clear as day in Wilbur's voice. "What if something happened to him?"
"Don't jump to conclusions," Techno warned. Jumping to conclusions never ended well, especially when it mixed with Wilbur's anxiety. "We'll keep trying to contact him and eventually he'll show up. I'm sure he's fine. The kid's too obnoxious and stubborn to let anything happen to him."
Wilbur sighed, relaxing slightly at his words. "I really hope he's okay."
Techno nodded, wishing he could believe his own words. "Me too, Wil. Me too."
