A New Addition to the Family (SBI)(7/7)

Wilbur POV

There was silence between the two brothers as they looked at the empty harbor. Wilbur couldn't believe what he was seeing. The boat had been there not even an hour before, how could it be gone? He began pacing up and down the dock, his heart pounding with each step.

"What are we going to do?" Techno whispered beside him, his eyes glued to the place where the boat had once been.

"She can't be gone, she just can't be..." Wilbur's voice trailed off. His eyes were close to tears as he truly realized the reality of the situation. Tommy was gone. He had got what he had wanted... No more obnoxious crying every fifteen minutes. No more fighting over the attention of Phil. Only silence.

Somehow the idea of that seemed worse.

"I'm so stupid," Wilbur murmured.

Techno paused, "I'm the one who didn't stop you."

Wilbur buried his face in his hands, "How could I get so jealous of a baby?" He thought back to what Kristin had said. "We're supposed to be the ones who protect him..."

"We can only promise to do better," Techno spoke quietly. He sat down on the dock, patting the ground beside him. "We'll wait here until Puffy returns and we demand him back."

Wilbur slumped beside him, "What if she never returns?"

The pinkette shrugged, "I'm okay waiting here. That, or we'll track her down."

"Sounds like a good plan until we starve to death."

"Luckily, you won't have to wait that long."

The two of them jumped at the sudden voice, whipping around to see Puffy walking towards them from the trees. Her ship was no where to be seen. Tommy squirmed in her arms, screaming in joy at the sight of them.

"Puffy? What?" Techno didn't even know what to say.

Wilbur stood up, pushing his confusion aside. "We want Tommy back. I know we made a deal and usually I would leave it at that, but this goes far beyond any normal deal. He's our brother, he belongs with us."

"Is that so? You said-" Puffy raised an eyebrow, smirking.

"I know what I said," Wilbur held a hand up. "I was driven by my own jealous stupidity and..." he turned back to the captain. "I'll give you whatever you want. My emerald, my favorite records... even my own guitar." He spoke with no hesitation. "Just please, consider our deal off."

"You know I never go back on a deal," she said coolly, seemingly yawning at the options. 

"Please! I'll give you whatever you want," Wilbur was practically on his knees.

He felt a hand on his shoulder before watching Techno step forward. "I can offer my sword, any books you might want. Anything." His voice was cold, almost threatening.

Puffy looked between the two before turning back towards the baby in her arms. Tommy screamed again, his arms outstretched towards Wilbur and Techno. "No." Wilbur could feel his heart begin to pound again. "We had an agreement and we must stick to it. I have a reputation to uphold." She turned back towards the woods, about to walk away, but Wilbur was quick to grab her arm.

"Puffy! You cannot be serious! You've known us forever, please!" That's when he realized she was laughing. He took a step back.

She turned back towards them, chuckling, "You always were the gullible one." Cradling Tommy in her arms, she smiled, "I just wanted to be sure you realized the regret of your mistake." Holding him out, Wilbur took the baby in his arms. 

Tommy giggled, immediately clinging to Wilbur's clothes. "You never were going to take him, were you?" he whispered.

"No, I just needed you to realize your mistake." She thought for a moment. "Being jealous is understandable, but you can never let that emotion control your actions. You won't always be able to reverse the consequences." She sighed, "Take it from someone who made the mistake."

Techno looked up towards her. "Who-"

"It's in the past," she shrugged off the question. "But the past can't forget the regret." Another moment of silence and she stood up straighter, turning on her heel. "Hope to see you on a better occasion, boys! Remember what I said!" Then she vanished into the woods, leaving the brothers in silence.

A snore from Tommy broke the silence, bringing Wilbur and Techno back to reality. Wilbur looked into his arms, smiling slightly. "I never thought I be so relieved to hold him again," he murmured.

"I wonder what she was talking about."

"Does it matter? We have Tommy, now we can go home and pretend that nothing happened." Wilbur began heading back home, taking a few steps before realizing that Techno wasn't behind him. He paused, "Come on Tech, we don't have much time before Tommy wakes up."

"Did you mean what you said?" Techno questioned. "That you would protect him now, like a brother?"

Wilbur nodded, "Of course. How else will I become his favorite?"

"Too bad, I'm already his favorite!" Techno let his serious face fall, replacing it with an amusing grin. 

The two brothers continued quietly bickering back and forth, walking through the woods. There was a new vow between them, one that brothers swore to keep.

Kristin and Phil were never going to know what happened that day.
