Tommy POV
Tommy felt like he could take on the entire world. He had aced that test, he was sure of it. Hours of restless studying and late nights had finally worked in his favor. For a moment, he was happy. Happier than he had been in a long time.
Everything changed the moment he took one step into that hallway. Almost immediately the air seemed to be sucked out of the room. The passing students jumped over each other, attempting to get out of the line sight of the brewing storm. Tommy already knew they were there before he even caught sight of them.
It was a group of five boys, each glaring directly at their target. They were older by a few years, in the same grade as Wilbur and Techno. In fact, Wilbur's bandmate and best friend was the leader of the group. Not that the brunette had any idea that he was friends with his brother's bully. And as much as Tommy so desperately wanted to tell him, he knew it would only make his life worse.
Pausing outside the door, the blonde considered just turning around and talking to the teacher until they went away. But he didn't want to be late for his next class. Even though he knew that he was probably going to be late either way.
Finding his footing, he stepped into the hallway. It was easy to navigate under their watchful gaze. Maybe they would leave him alone for another hour, he thought. A voice immediately crushed that hope.
"Hey Toms!" Derek smirked, leaning against the locker that happened to be Tommy's.
Tommy cringed at the way he said it. He loved the nickname his brothers had given him. After all, it was the first nickname he had ever been given that was out of love. But when Derek said it the name wasn't sweet anymore. It was insulting.
Sighing, he attempted to get to his locker, only to have another boy stand in his way. "Hello Derek," he finally groaned, wishing to be anywhere but here.
"Going somewhere?" the older boy questioned, crossing his arms.
"Just trying to get to class," Tommy murmured. "Can you get out of my way?"
"You didn't say please!" Another boy piped up.
Derek grinned at that, taunting, "Say please Toms!"
Tommy glared at him, his face flushing with heat. This was humiliating. And they knew it.
The grin on Derek's face only seemed to widen with the realization that he was winning. He still refused to move, his eyes locked on Tommy's. "Well? Aren't you going to say the magic word?"
Biting his lip, Tommy wanted nothing more than to punch the boy straight in the teeth. Just seeing the look on his face would be all the satisfaction he would ever need. If it were just the two of them, he probably would have. But they weren't alone.
"Answer him!" one boy grabbed him by the collar, lifting him up a few inches off the ground. The boy thought he was intimidating, with his bulky muscles and jelled back hair. But Tommy wasn't afraid of him. He wasn't afraid of any of them really. He was just so tired of the bruises.
"Does it really matter?" Tommy asked, allowing his backpack to slip through his hands and onto the floor. A few books fell out of the bag, spilling onto the tile. "You'll still beat me up anyway."
Derek chuckled, "I guess you're right. You just gave me a reason to beat you up more." He motioned for the other boy to drop him, which he did. Tommy fell to the ground, immediately feeling the sting of the bruises on his legs. Derek knelt down, tilting his head towards Tommy's ear. "See you during lunch Tommy, don't be late." He made sure Tommy could see the blade hidden in his pocket.
The group left him trembling there, likely drifting to their next target. Tommy sat there for a moment, burying his face in his knees. He focused on his breathing, attempting to calm down. Why did his body react this way? It was routine. He should expect it. Yet there he was, shaking on the school floor.
"Tommy? You alright?" his head whipped up, his eyes widening on none other than Wilbur. Did he see? "What are you doing on the floor?" Of course not. Fate wasn't that kind.
Tommy allowed Wilbur to help him to his feet. He was quick to collect his books, ignoring the shakiness of his hands. "I-I dropped my books and with the halls getting so crowded..."
Wilbur nodded in understanding, though he still looked around in confusion. "It didn't look that crowded to me..." But he shook the thought off before turning to the younger. "How'd your big test go?"
"Great! I think I aced it!" Tommy couldn't stop himself from lighting up a bit. That seemed to ease Wilbur's worry.
The brunette ruffled the boy's hair, declaring, "I knew you could do it!" Tommy laughed, pretending to swat his hand away. "I'm so proud of you." Tommy froze at his words, making Wilbur back off. "Are you alright? Did I say something wrong-"
Before he could say another word, Tommy had rushed forward, engulfing his older brother in a tight hug. Burying his face in Wilbur's chest, he whispered, "Thank you."
Wilbur didn't understand Tommy's sudden need for a hug, but he wasn't about to let go either. He hugged him back, making sure the boy felt safe. They stood there for a moment, ignoring the awes of the passing students.
The bell rung, finally causing Wilbur to clear his throat. Tommy let go hesitantly, wanting nothing more than to stay in his brother's embrace. "I have to go Toms, but I'll see you after school, alright?" He was already heading towards his next class, when he paused, shouting, "Remember! Tonight's movie night!"
Tommy waved back, yelling, "I can't wait!" He watched his brother disappear through the crowd. Forcing his feet into motion, he traced his steps back to his next class. He just needed to focus on that. No matter how bad the day got, it was still his favorite day of the week.
But he knew that his bruises wouldn't let him forget.
