Wilbur POV

The days went by slowly, each one more unbearable than the last. The two of them trained from dawn till dusk, with little time in between for anything else. They were struggling to get up to date with the training everyone else already had up until that point. They focused mostly on combat, teaching them self defense and shooting skills. They even touched on knives and swords. If war wasn't a threat they were facing, Wilbur might have actually enjoyed it.

He had always dreamed of becoming a knight. It was childish, of course. But he always wanted to  protect the weak and preserve the peace he cherished. Those dreams grew with him as he left childhood, growing into becoming a musician. Music was his whole world. But after their parents passed, Wilbur gave up those dreams. Suddenly those desires weren't important anymore. His world was suddenly so much smaller.

But any enjoyment he might have felt from training vanished at the sight of his little brother practicing beside him. Tommy was about to fight a war. One that Wilbur wasn't sure he could protect him from.

Tommy continued to giggle and smile, still shining as bright as he always did. But Wilbur knew that he was never going to hear that laugh again. The innocence he had now was going to be stripped away.

"Today we move out. No more waiting to see what the enemy does. We must attack before the Antarctic Empire before takes us by surprise! Everyone who can fight will, and that includes our newest recruits." Schlatt paused, standing up straighter. He stood taller than everyone else on the platform. There was a clear divide that nobody but him seemed to cross. "Assignments will be given out by each officer. Dismissed!"

Everyone began to scatter, murmurs of doubts and terror spreading throughout the group. Wilbur felt a tug on his arm. Glancing towards his little brother, his heart broke looking into his terrified eyes. "I thought you said I wouldn't have to fight..." he bit his lip.

The older sighed, wishing he could have kept his promise. To break it... felt worse than anything else. He wanted nothing more than to say he didn't have to. He didn't have to march onto a bloody battlefield. He didn't have to fight for his life. Forcing a smile, he said, "I'll be right by your side the entire time. That I can promise."

Tommy looked at him with uncertainty. "Are you sure?"

"Positive," Wilbur looked into his eyes.

A moment passed before the reassurance seemed to register. A small smile appeared on his face. But any reassurance Tommy felt in that moment was immediately stripped away with a shout form Fundy, "Wilbur, you're in squad four! Tommy, you'll be in squad seven."

Wilbur felt his blood begin to boil. "We're in separate squads?" He stomped towards Fundy, ready to give him a piece of his mind. They couldn't just separate them... Could they?

Fundy sighed, a look of guilt shining in his eyes. "I'm sorry Wilbur. It's Schlatt's orders-"

"Well f-" But he was quickly cut off by Fundy slapping a hand over his mouth.

Wilbur shoved him off with a glare, "What are you-"

"You ticking him off will only make things worse," Fundy hissed, stealing a glance over his shoulder. If experience had taught him anything, it was that Schlatt wouldn't tolerate any disobedience.

"I'm not going to leave my brother alone-"

"You don't have a choice! Just let it go Wil. You'll be lucky to even see him on the battlefield." Fundy reached out for Tommy, despite the brunette's glare. "Trust me Wil, you're not the first. I'm just trying to stop you from making the same mistakes they did."
