Tommy POV
Tommy tried to forget all about the events of the day. Pacing around the den, he struggled to forget. He just couldn't get the image of the creature out of his head. He had always known there were other people like him... but to actually see one. It was a whole different experience.
Settling down for the night, Tommy couldn't even think of closing his eyes. A wolf seemed to sense his discomfort, nuzzling into his side. The motherly female tilted her head, whimpering softly. He leaned into her warmth, closing his eyes.
Sleep seemed to be the easiest cure to his perdicament. Luckily, it came quickly. Before long his breathing had slowed and darkness blanketed his vision. But it didn't last.
Tommy woke with a start. Looking around, he couldn't conclude what had woken him. He slowly got to his feet. Creeping out of the den, he was careful to avoid making any sound. He was grateful for the stealth he had been taught by the wolves.
Using the comfort of the night, he traced his steps back to where he had seen the creature. Whether he felt curiousity or fear, he wasn't sure. He figured it was probably a mix of both. There was a small voice deep inside him that needed to know more. Though he wasn't sure of what he might find.
Tommy tracked back to where he had stood only hours before. He couldn't help but feel disappointment when he found nothing there. Even the missed arrows the creature had fired seemed to have disappeared. Running a hand across the bark of a tree, he could still find the indent. Where could they have gone?
Shaking his head, he couldn't believe what a waste of time this had all been. He could be safe in his den, warm and protected. Yet, here he stood in the cold night air, searching for something that wasn't even here. Turning back towards the way he came, he stopped.
The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. Sensing a new presence, he turned back around. His breath hitched at the sight of the strange creature.
The creature stood, a look of fear evident his charcoal brown eyes. Tommy's eyes narrowed on the bow in his hands. He was afraid to know what he was seen as. A wolf? Or a human?
The human paused, slowly lowering his weapon. Biting his lip, he spoke up, "What are you doing out here kid?"
Tommy glanced at him in confusion. The sounds should have made sense to him. But he struggled to find any connection between the supposed words. He began to back up, his eyes still glued to the bow. He had hurt his family... what would stop the man from hurting him?
The creature seemed to take notice of his discomfort. Stepping back, he placed the weapon at his feet. "I'm not going to hurt you... I promise."
Again Tommy gave him a clueless look. He stopped moving away, but he also didn't move any closer. The man held out his hands, as if to say he wasn't a threat. Finally it was something Tommy could piece together and understand.
The creature continued to approach him. Tommy stayed frozen in his spot, his curiousity getting the better of him. When the man was a few feet in front of him, he came to a halt. Sitting down, he smiled kindly at the boy.
"You... you don't speak English... Do you?"
Tommy tilted his head, whimpering a bit. It was the only way he knew how to communicate.
The man sent him a sympatheic look. "I can only imagine how long you've been out here..." His eyes drifted back towards Tommy's ripped clothes. "Techno's not going to believe me..." Shaking his head, he turned back towards the boy. Pointing at himself, he said, "Wilbur."
Tommy stared at him, still clueless as to what he meant.
The man sighed. Again, he did the same thing. "Wilbur." he repeated, pointing towards himself.
The blonde opened his mouth, struggling to copy the sounds. "Wil- Wil- Wilby?" he attempted, looking at the creature curiously.
Wilbur chuckled, a look of fondness drifting in his eyes. "That will have to do for now." He moved a bit closer to the blonde, resulting in the boy backing up further. "I promise I won't hurt you. We're one in the same-" his voice trailed off. Thinking for a moment, he found the perfect way to communicate.
Holding out his hand, he motioned for the boy to give him his hand. Glancing at the man with uncertainty, he hesitated. This was the same man who had hurt his family... But one look in the man's eyes and he felt a strange wave of trust. The man seemed nothing less than genuine. And that little voice didn't seem to tell him otherwise.
Tommy gave him his hand, surprised to feel how soft the man's skin was. Could they really be one in the same. Wilbur held their hands up, matching palm to palm. "See? We're the same." Tommy looked closer at the match, his eyes wide. It was strange to find something common with another creature. He had gotten so used to being alone.
The boy smiled up at him, a new spark of curiousity filling his eye. "Wil-Wilby!" he exclaimed, finding pride in being able to say the name correctly.
Wilbur laughed, entwining his fingers with the boy. "That's right!" He paused, meeting his blue eyes. "I wonder... I wonder what your name is."
Tommy tilted his head once more. He wanted so desperately to be able to know what the man meant. He wanted to be a part of his strange world. A thought crossed his mind. Maybe this man would be willing to help him. He pointed towards Wilbur and then made a speaking motion.
It was Wilbur's turn to be confused. Looking at the younger, he struggled to understand what he meant. Going through several words, he stopped as the realization struck him. "You want me to teach you?" He did the motion right back, showing that he understood.
Tommy nodded eagerly, grinning from ear to ear. He stood up straighter, following Wilbur's posture.
The man smiled fondly, agreeing. "Alright... why don't we start with this!" He began picking up objects that were scattered around him, explaining the word that went along with them. Tommy listened to every word, committing it to memory.
And as they went on, he picked up easier and easier. They met nearly every night, allowing Tommy's vocabulary to grow more and more.
It was exciting for the boy, to learn something that felt so right. But it didn't come without it's trials.
One day Wilbur came with a new opportunity... an offer.
