Tommy POV
The last few months had been like a dream come true. Wilbur and Phil had quickly become their closest friends on the Internet. While they had never met in real life, it somehow felt like they had known them forever. They played together nearly every day, quickly becoming a fan favorite among the Minecraft community.
As for Techno's Youtube channel, it seemed to grow at a rapid rate after every video. Whether it was because of their interactions or a new interest in Minecraft, it didn't matter to Tommy. He loved every minutes of it. It was the thing he looked forward to every day, even more than before.
But Tommy couldn't help but notice it taking a toll on Techno. His brother seemed to be taking more and more days off. Techno reassured it was because he had the time for vacation days, but Tommy knew there was more to it. On those days, the older barely left his bed, aside from making meals or going to the bathroom. The exhaustion from even the simplest tasks scared Tommy.
But Techno still managed to play for a little bit each day. Even if it was just for an hour, Tommy was grateful for every second of it.
Tommy's fears finally came true when Techno came home late one day. It was the first day that week that Techno hadn't called in sick. When he didn't arrival exactly on time, Tommy tried not to worry. After all, he had missed nearly a week of grading papers. Perhaps he was simply catching up on his work.
One hour slowly turned into two. Again, Tommy attempted to ease his worry. Techno probably got sidetracked. The blonde was positive he must be on his way home.
When the clock struck three hours, Tommy finally gave in. Dialing his phone, he couldn't stop himself from pacing. Pick up, he begged silently. What he supposed to do if he didn't? Tommy couldn't drive, nor could he call anyone. And the people he usually depended on were across the world.
Ten minutes later and his concerns were relieved. The soft sound of the doorknob turning made Tommy pause. Looking up, he smiled at the sight of his big brother. "There you are! I was starting to worry-"
His smile faded as he sensed something different about him. Something was off. His usual confident sense about him was blank... even sad.
Tommy approach the shadow, hesitating. "Techno? What's wrong?"
The older didn't respond, his eyes still glued to his feet. It was like he wasn't even there. Like the man before him was the shell of who he once knew.
"Techno?" the blonde reached out to grab his brother's attention when Techno finally met his eyes. There was a heartbroken glimmer in his brown eyes, something Tommy had never seen before. "What happened? Are you okay?"
Techno said nothing, simply reaching out to grasp the boy's arm. Pulling him into a tight hug, Tommy was beyond confused. Techno's grip on him was deadly, like he was terrified Tommy might slip through his fingers and disappear. Melting into the hug, Tommy put his confusion aside. Techno must have really had a bad day, he thought to himself.
They stood like that for much longer than Tommy had originally anticipated. Tommy was the first to pull away at the feeling of tears in his hair. Meeting his brother's eyes, he reached out to wipe away the tears. What happened? Every voice in his head demanded an answer to the question. "Tech? You're scaring me..."
Techno only seemed to cry more at his words, going in for another hug. But Tommy moved away, more freaked out than moved. Why was Techno acting like this? Why had he gone silent? Tommy hated to admit it, but he missed Techno's sarcastic remarks.
Taking one more look into Techno's broken soul, Tommy decided the best way to fix the problem was to cheer up his brother. He lead Techno slowly to the couch, nearly escaping his death grip once more. He threw a fuzzy blanket over his big brother with the promise of being right back. Rushing to their shared room, he grabbed Techno's pig plush. It was one of the only things that could cheer Techno up better than Tommy could himself. The blonde ran back to the living room before offering it to the older.
Techno took one look between the plush and Tommy before grabbing the boy again. This time Tommy complied with a huff. Clingy Techno was not something he was enjoying. They sat there for a few more minutes before Tommy tried again. "If you don't tell me what's wrong, I'm calling Phil." The threat was harmless, but it seemed to do the trick.
Techno slowly sat up, releasing Tommy in the process. Taking a deep breath, he met Tommy's eyes once more. Tommy hated seeing how glassy they were. What happened his Techno? Who was he going to have to kill.
Tommy's blood ran cold as the words slowly came out of Techno's mouth.
"I have cancer."
