Tommy POV

"Do we really have to go?" Tommy whined, squirming back and forth in his seat. There were a million other things he would rather be doing. Playing video games, editing videos, playing piano, even the miserable idea of doing chores would be better. If Tommy could have jumped out of the car, he would have.

"This appointment has been on the calendar for six months, Tommy." Phil called from the driver's seat. His voice was stern, too stern to argue with.

But that didn't stop Tommy from trying.

"There's still time to cancel," he muttered, leaning against the window. Looking out at the passing walls of trees, Tommy felt like a bird trapped in a cage. Freedom was so close, yet so far away. Jumping out of the car was still an option.

"You're just worried they're going to find a cavity," Wilbur smirked, popping out from the passenger seat.

"You're one to talk, Wil," Tommy glared as the car turned off the freeway.

The brunette sat up straighter. "I'll have you know I've only had one cavity in my eighteen years of living."

"Imagine having a cavity."

"We weren't talking to you, Techno."

The pinkette in question rolled his eyes, his nose falling back into his book.

Tommy chuckled, distracted for the moment. It was true, Techno had always had perfect teeth. No cavities or thought of braces. Sometimes the dentists joked that he would be the one to put them out of business.

"Toms, it's just a normal checkup," Phil reminded him, pulling the car into a parking spot. He turned towards the blonde, "It'll be done and over with before you know it."

"Unless they find a cavity-" Wilbur chimed.

"Do you want more chores?" the man threatened, sending the brunette into silence. Tommy laughed, watching Wilbur's face fall. In his opinion, Wilbur deserved extra chores. "Come on, Tommy. The sooner we go in, the sooner we'll be home."

Tommy nodded, pushing the door open. The moment he stepped out and saw the dentist, his nerves came back. Immediately he began picking at his nails. He hated everything about the dentist. From the pristine white jackets and blue masks to the scrapping of each teeth individually. How could anyone like the dentist?

His hesitation must have caused a hold up, because Techno approached him, frowning. "You coming?" His brown eyes studied every inch of the boy like a book. Tommy was silent, still picking at his nails. "When we get home, I'll teach you some fencing if you want."

Tommy's face lit up at the idea. After months of begging and pleading to even hold Techno's precious sword, just the thought was enough to bring a smile to his face. "If you insist..." he grinned, pushing past the older and heading towards the front door. He ignored Techno rolling his eyes and followed Wilbur.

Phil signed them in quickly and much to Tommy's irritation, his name was the first one called. Slouching forward, he followed the dentist towards the back. Was it too late to run? Glancing back towards the entrance, Techno met his eye. He nodded slightly, a simple gesture to tell him he was okay. One more deep breath and he disappeared from his family's view.

The back of the dentist office was reflections of white. White walls, white tile, even the doors were white. The only mix of color was a few posters exclaiming the importance of taking care of your teeth. Tommy followed the lady into another room. That's where Tommy saw the dreaded chair.

"How have you been, Tommy?" the orthodontist smiled at him, indicating towards the chair. He sat down, hating the plastic feeling of the armrests.

He sighed, reminding himself that she was just doing her job. "Great."

"School going well?" She pulled on her gloves.

"Yup," he gulped, watching as she put on her mask. You've done this loads of times before, he reminded himself. It's no big deal. But deep down he couldn't escape the dread that filled his stomach.

Her eyes traced over to him carefully. She paused, "My name is Autumn by the way." He nodded, again picking at his nails. She thought carefully for a moment. "My daughter hates coming to the dentist too."

"Even though you're a dentist?" he questioned.

Autumn nodded, "She had a lot of cavities as a child and even into her teen years. She hated getting the fillings." Her hand guided over the tools to her right. "I still have to remind her how important going to the dentist is."

Tommy sighed, "I just hate the feeling of scraping on teeth."

"Most people do," she smiled. "But I'll tell you what." He glanced towards her. "I'll try to get through this as quickly as possible, alright?"

He nodded, "Okay." Closing his eyes, he opened his mouth, hoping this would go by as quickly as possible.

They conversed back and forth in between rinsing. She asked about his family, his dreams in life, even his favorite candy. In return, she told him all about her life. Her husband passing away early in their marriage, the struggles of her daughter accepting that, and more recently her daughter finding the love of her life. Listening distracted him from reality. Until she examined his mouth closer.

"You still have your wisdom teeth," she commented, carefully counting each tooth.

He nodded.

She frowned, turning back towards her computer screen. He looked over her shoulder. Why was she looking at the x-ray of his teeth? Was something wrong? Immediately his heart began racing. He was picking at his nails again.

"Is something wrong?" he asked.

Autumn finally turned towards him, a spark of sympathy in her eyes.

"Tommy... You need to get your wisdom teeth out."
