Tommy POV
Tommy opened his eyes, a bright smile on his face. Today was his favorite day of the year. His birthday. More precisely, his sixteenth birthday.
He jumped out of bed, ready to start his day. There were many reasons why today was his favorite. One, he got closer to being an adult, meaning he was closer to not being called child anymore. And two, it was the one day of the year that everyone took off. With both of his brothers off to college and his father constantly on business trips, Tommy was often alone. But for just twenty-four hours, the house would feel alive. For one day, his family felt complete again.
He quickly threw on clothes, not bothering to run a comb through his hair. He made his way downstairs, where he imagined his family would be waiting. Maybe they were making waffles, or even better, pancakes! Finally reaching the bottom, he stopped. The dining room was dark, just as dead as the rest of the house.
Immediately his joy deflated like a balloon. Where were they? Did they forget? A phone call cut into his thoughts. Grabbing his phone from his pocket, he hesitated, hoping the call would answer his conflicting questions. "Hello?" he closed his eyes, hoping whoever it was couldn't hear the shakiness in his voice.
"Happy birthday Toms!" a voice exclaimed, immediately painting a smile on his face. For just a moment, the darkness wasn't noticeable.
"Thanks Wilbur." Tommy grinned, forgetting about the empty house. He hadn't talked to Wilbur in so long, with him being so busy with college and his band, he had little time for anything else. But he still kept in touch, offering support for Tommy whenever he needed it. The brunette was one of the biggest things he had been looking forward to. "Where are you?" he asked.
There was a pause, allowing doubt to claw at the blonde's heart. He wasn't coming. Deep down, he knew that. Wilbur sighed, "I won't be able to make it Toms." Guilt poured through his words, making Tommy's heart shatter even more.
Tommy could feel the tears building up in his eyes. His one wish wasn't going to come true and that hurt worse than anything. Regardless, he made an attempt to hide how much it hurt him. He didn't want Wilbur to feel worse. "You're still going to get me a gift, right?" he laughed, trying to make light of the situation.
The brunette chuckled, relief evident in his voice. "Of course Toms. I'll get you your best gift yet!" Nothing could ever beat you coming home, Tommy thought solemnly. But he didn't say that aloud.
"I'll hold you to it!" the blonde exclaimed, wiping the lone tear that had escaped from his eye. Glancing towards the clock, he wasn't sure how much longer he could keep this act up. If he bottled up his emotions anymore, the glass would break. "I gotta go Wil, I'll talk to you soon." And before Wilbur could properly say goodbye, Tommy hung up.
Tommy sat at the counter, taking deep breaths. Techno and Phil were still coming. At least he wouldn't be alone on his birthday. Phil had left earlier in the week on a business trip, with the promise that he would return in time for his birthday. And the blonde knew he wouldn't break his promise. But not having his entire family with him still broke his heart.
Deciding to at least try to have a good day, Tommy began to make himself breakfast. He began mixing ingredients, excited to have his favorite food, pancakes. Halfway through flipping them, the blonde's phone began to go off. Groaning a bit, he picked up. "Hello?"
"Happy birthday Theseus!" a monotone voice came through the speaker, signifying their best attempt at showing genuine excitement.
Tommy smiled, ignoring the lump that grew in his throat. "Thanks Tech." He stepped away from the pancakes, wiping the flour off his hands. "A-are you on your way?" He hated how much he stuttered.
There was a pause, even worse than the first time. The blonde closed his eyes, his grip tightening on his phone. This couldn't be happening. "I'm really sorry Theseus, I won't be able to-" Tommy hung off, his knees giving out. His heart couldn't handle anymore. Burying his face in his knees, he tried to take deep breaths. The only thing that made him jump to his feet was the smell of something burning.
Grabbing a spatula, he tried to distract himself. He attempted to save his breakfast, wiping the tears from his face as he went. But they were already stuck to the pan and still burning. He gave up, pulling the pan off the stove and finally breaking down.
Curling up against the counter, he allowed his glass walls to break. Tears clouded his vision, collecting in one big stream. Why could nobody make it? Was he not worth the trip?
And to make matters worse, he received a text. He contemplated looking at it, only agreeing to do so in the hopes of it making him feel better. It had the opposite effect.
"Hey Tommy! Business trip went longer than I expected! I won't be able to make it! Have fun with your brothers! Stay out of trouble!"- Dad
Tommy burst into tears.
Worst day ever.
