Just a Misunderstanding (Tommy angst)(3/3)

Tommy POV

Tommy watched a flash of panic strike Dream as realized what he said. The older cursed under his breath. Looking away, he muttered, "Shit, Phil's going to kill me." Groaning, he glanced back at Tommy. He had a small sliver of hope in his eyes, like maybe Tommy hadn't heard what he said.

But Tommy crushed that dream with one question. "Wh-what surprise?"

"Forget I said that." Dream tried to shrug it off. Looking at his nonexistent watch, he sighed, "Just come with me, okay?" Tommy opened his mouth to protest, but the blonde quickly cut him off. "Please?" He was practically begging at this point.

Tommy's hands went to his pocket, clutching the small ticket. What about running away? He hated the relief he felt with the thought of being forced to stay. Or did he?

"Give me that." Dream suddenly said, holding out his hand.

Tommy said nothing, his eyes glued to his feet.

"Tommy." the blonde repeated sternly. "If you give it to me... I'll tell you about the surprise."

The teen nodded, his desperation to know overtaking his escape plan. Digging into his pocket, he handed the small paper to Dream. The blonde took one look at it before ripping it up and throwing it the ground.

"Dream!" Tommy rushed forward, thinking he might be able to prevent it. But there was nothing he could do. His ticket was nothing but scraps. He had figured Dream was going to pocket the ticket or maybe just look at it. Not rip it into a million pieces. "I paid for that!"

Dream grabbed his arm, beginning to drag him down the street. "You'll thank me later."

"But-"

"Trust me Tommy, this is all just a misunderstanding."

Tommy stopped fighting, simply accepting his fate. Part of him was praying that Dream wasn't lying. He didn't want to trace his steps back to the bus stop. Running away... it was something he had always hated doing. But he would do it if he had to.

They walked past house after house as the minutes ticked by. Dream's grip never loosened even as they approached the house. Tommy held his breath, praying that Dream was telling the truth. He wasn't sure he could handle anything else. Dream gently pushed him towards the door. Taking a deep breath, Tommy carefully opened the door.

Stepping inside, he gasped. All around him were decorations. Streams, balloons, even a huge banner saying "Happy Birthday Toms!". Tommy had to take a step back to take it all in. It was for him. They remembered.

"Surprise!" People shouted, popping out of every corner. Bright smiles filled everyone's faces. Tommy couldn't help but mirror it. But that didn't distract from the guilt he felt. How could he jump to conclusions? What if Dream hadn't stopped him... He would have hurt the people that loved him.

Wilbur and Techno were the first to approach him, a small glint of worry hiding in their eyes. "Where were you?" Wilbur asked, his eyes tracing towards Dream. "Why didn't you meet us after school?"

Tommy refused to meet his eyes. "I-I took the long way home..."

Dream stepped forward, watching Tommy carefully. "He-"

"I ran into Dream!" Tommy exclaimed, glaring at the older. He didn't want to ruin the moment. To have his family realize how close they had been to losing him. It would break their hearts. "And then we got talking and- We lost track of time!"

Dream sighed, slowly nodding his head. "Yeah, I ran into him on the way here." 

Tommy smiled at him gratefully, glad he was willing to lie for the blonde's sake. Before they could ask more questions, Tommy rushed forward. He wrapped his arms around both his brothers. "This is the best surprise ever!"

Pulling away, the two smiled at him. "Now come see your presents!" Wilbur grinned, leading him towards a table filled with all kinds of gifts. Tommy followed, glancing back at Dream. Thank you, he mouthed.

Dream nodded, mouthing, I told you so.

As much as he hated to admit it. Tommy was glad Dream was right.
