Tommy POV

Keeping to himself was a lot more difficult than he had presumed. People passed him, one after the other, always sparing an extra glance his way. Tommy curled further in on himself, his eyes glued to the phone. He figured it would help distract him, help time go faster. And that worked for a while.

Until his phone suddenly began buzzing as a contact popped up. Tommy froze as he read the name. Wilbur... Frantically, he declined the call, easing with the silence that followed. Was that the best idea? What if... No, they weren't worried about him. Tommy ran a nervous hand through his hair, stuffing his phone back in his pocket. The blonde quickly resorted to staring at his feet.

Thoughts began to bounce around his head, falling victim to both sides of the situation. There wasn't really a clear answer. Was he really going to go through with this? He did already buy the ticket... It was the best thing for him! Was it? But what about them? What would they think with one less person in their life? Tommy shook his head, falling back to his original plan. He had seen it all before. Neglection always turned to abandonment. It was better to leave before they had the chance to kick him out.

"Tommy?" A familiar voice tore him out of his sea of thoughts. Blinking a few times, he gasped at the sight of Dream. His heart rate began to quicken as panic ran through his veins.

"Dream... What are you doing here?"

The older stared at him, his green eyes piercing through his blue ones. He was quick to dodge the question, rounding the conversation back to Tommy. "What are you doing here Tommy?"

"I asked you first!" Tommy retorted, struggling to silence his playful remarks. Dream said nothing, seemingly unamused by the comment. He didn't move, still waiting for Tommy's reply. Tommy bit his lip, looking for any way out of this situation. Dream would try to stop him! Or worse... take him home. Was that really worse? Shaking his head, he knew better than to attempt to slide past Dream. The older was far from stupid. "Why... why do you care?"

Dream paused, his eyes tracing over the blonde. He was searching, Tommy realized. Searching for answers that Tommy was reluctant to give. His eyes stopped on the blonde's overstuffed pocket, where a sliver of the ticket could be seen. "Are you running away?"

"What?!" Tommy exclaimed, trying to act surprised. "Never! Why would think that?" Why did it sound so awful? Like he was the one abandoning them...

"Most people don't buy tickets unless they have a destination in mind."

Tommy bit his lip, pushing the ticket further into his pocket. He shifted from foot to foot, wishing a black hole would just come and swallow him up. Anything would be better than this.

Dream thought for a moment, his accusing gaze softening. "Phil doesn't know you're here... Have you even told him how you were feeling?"

Feeling? This was far beyond feeling. Tommy couldn't help but feel his blood begin to boil. "He doesn't care about me." he spat, feeling the hatred through each word. But did he really mean it?

The man sighed, "What do you mean? Tommy, he would never have taken you in if he didn't care about you. He adopted you remember? He offered you a home when no one else would. If that isn't love, then I don't know what is."

Tommy reconsidered his words, thinking back to the first moments in his new home. Safe and welcoming. It had been the best home he had ever stepped foot into. And as days became months, he was terrified it wouldn't be permanent. But Phil surprised him by asking to adopt him by his next birthday. And the rest was history.

But he couldn't forget this past week. "But they... they've forgotten all about me..."

Dream smiled, "I think you'll find that it's all a misunderstanding. Your brothers and father have always struggled when it comes to keeping a secret. Avoiding you... is probably the easiest way to not spoil the surprise."

Tommy blinked up at him in confusion. "Surprise?"
