Wilbur POV
The night was silent as he walked. No crickets or coyotes. No swishing of cool water. No rustle of the branches overhead. Even the twigs and leaves beneath his feet seemed to have gone silent.
Wilbur walked slowly, his heart beating quickly. The wind ruffled his hair but he paid no mind. He should be overjoyed, excited beyond belief. This is what he wanted. He wanted everything to go back to normal. He wanted their family to shrink back to what it was before. So why did he feel weighed down? Each footstep fell slowly behind the other, dragging more and more.
He shook the feeling off.
What's done was done.
Wilbur pushed through the forest, following the map in his head. There were so many memories in these woods. Techno and him had spent hours and hours playing all sorts of games. Pirates and knights, capture the flag and hide and the seek. As the years went on the games turned into training. Archery and fencing, horse riding and scavenging. Eventually they stopped coming to the woods all together.
He paused, stopping completely. Phil had found him in these very woods. In a sense, this is where it had all begun. Wilbur always wondered what it would have been like if he had ended up somewhere else. What if he had never been found? He may have not even lived very long, taking by the harsh conditions of the wooded world.
Sighing, he pushed himself forward. He needed to get home, Phil would be worried if he found his bed empty in the morning. Just stop thinking, he told himself.
The cottage peeked out beside the trees, every window dark. Squinting, his heart began to race. Did he leave his light on? His mind raced back to a few hours, he didn't remember leaving the light on. Maybe he just forgot? Wilbur crept closer to the house, taking a deep breath before climbing towards his window. It was his only way in.
The moment his feet touched the floor, he paused. Two amber eyes stared back at him silently.
His hand found its way to his chest. "Tech, you scared me!" he chuckled. He began pulling off his shoes and his cloak, frowning. "Is something wrong?" Techno clearly had something to say.
"Tell Puffy the deal is off."
Wilbur looked over at him. "It's too late, Tech."
Techno's face remained the same. "It's not too late. The exchange hasn't happened yet."
"Techno, it's for the best! Everything can go back to the way it was! Phil and Kristin don't have time for that baby. And they certainly didn't ask for him either," Wilbur exclaimed, closing the window quietly. "We're doing them a favor."
Techno shook his head, fidgeting with his fingers.
"Don't tell me you've started caring about the kid!" Wilbur gasped. Techno looked away, confirming his suspicions. "Look at all the attention he's taking away from us! All Phil and Kristin have time to care about is that baby!" His hand clutched into a fist. It wasn't the kid's fault, he knew that. But Wilbur didn't ask for it either. "I thought you would be on my side. Didn't you always promise to be on my side?" His voice was quieter.
The pinkette sighed, closing his eyes. "I'm just saying to think about it. I was hoping you might change your mind." He turned on his heel, heading for the door without another word.
"I'm taking him, whether you like it or not." Techno paused. "You can either come with me or stay here. It makes no difference to me."
Techno closed his eyes, likely hating every word.
"Fine. I'll come."
-----------------
The next day Wilbur's plan was set into motion. After convincing Phil they were taking Tommy to the lake to give him a break, they headed towards Puffy's. Techno took every opportunity to question Wilbur, still praying he might change his mind.
