After your busy weekend, you're happy to be back at school for classes. Still tired, you're one of the last to arrive in class Monday morning, and everyone is as loud as ever.
“Morning!!” You sigh as you open the door. It slides open with a soft scraping, and a few of your classmates greet you enthusiastically.
“Hey, hey, Y/n!” Mina grins, standing behind Jiro. “Say, what's up with Bakugou? Another fight?”
Jiro glances over at the grumpy blond, and you walk over to join them. His face is covered in scrapes, bruises, and a few bandages. “Oh, jeez, you okay, Bakugou?” You ask. “You look pretty roughed up!”
He grunts at you in response, glancing away in annoyance. Kaminari tuts and gestures to Todoroki at his seat in the back, drawing your attention away from Bakugou. “Try to keep up, girls. Have a look at Todoroki.”
Sure enough, his face is just as bad as Bakugou’s. “What a waste of those good looks!! What happened?! Did they fight??” Mina asks. A laugh escapes you as you hear her, and Bakugou looks even more annoyed that you nodded to Mina.
“Guess the provisional license course is running them ragged.” Jiro says as Kaminari leans over her desk.
“I didn't know it'd be so physically gruelling!” Mina exclaims.
“Enough gossiping, ya jerks!!” Bakugou shouts, his voice laced with irritation. His right fist slams repeatedly into his desk, thumping with each hit.
“Hey, it's okay! I'd probably look the same if I hadn't gotten healed by Recovery Girl yesterday...!” You say, stepping closer to Bakugou. “You're just working hard, right?”
Bakugou glares up at you, grinding his teeth. “I don't wanna hear how you're getting ahead of me!!” He snaps. His eyes dart away from you, glaring at the front of the classroom. “And of course I'm working hard... When don't I?” Bakugou grumbles, barely loud enough for you to hear it. A small smile tugs at your lips, but before you can respond, Mina and Kaminari groan and step forward.
“Hey, man! Don't be so rude to Y/n! You should be happy a sweetheart like her is defending you!” Kaminari shakes his head as he puts an arm around your shoulders.
“Piss off!!” Bakugou snaps at him. Behind his desk, Mineta starts bugging Midoriya. The usually alert boy is totally zoned out at his desk. He must not have slept well the night before, based on the bags under his eyes.
“How's the work study, Midork-study? You really working with some chick in a pervy costume??” Mineta taps the edge of poor Midoriya’s desk.
“Uh-huh...” Midoriya responds blankly, not even glancing at Mineta.
“How long’re you doing it for?? Can I join?” Mina asks, jumping into the one sided conversation.
“Uh-huh...” Comes the same response from Midoriya.
“What's up with him...?” You ask Kaminari and Bakugou quietly.
“Dunno, he's been like that all week...” Kaminari shrugs. “He's totally out of it.”
“Weird... I'll try to ask him about it later...” You say quietly. Bakugou rolls his eyes, glancing to the side as if he wants to turn around to check on Midoriya as well.
“Class is about to begin!! Where are Uraraka and Tsuyu?!” Iida’s volume causes you to jump and glance in his direction.
“Excused absences, President.” Momo raises her hand, sitting quietly at her desk.
“Looks like the boys are missing Kirishima...” Jirou says.
“Oh, he's doing his work study today!” Kaminari explains. “I wish I got accepted for one...! I really wanna do one! I can't believe you and Tokoyami took down an entire gang this weekend, Y/n!! Talk about cool!”
You can't help but laugh at Kaminari’s enthusiasm. “Thanks, Kami!”
“Quit talking about how you're all getting ahead of me!!”
.
.
.A few hours later, it's time for rescue training at USJ with Thirteen and Aizawa. As you walk up to wait for your instructions, you give Tokoyami a light fist bump.
“You ready to ace this?” You grin. He smiles at your enthusiasm and nods.
“Quiet. Today we're going to be practicing water rescue. You'll be splitting into pairs to practice rescuing a drowning victim. Y/n, since you’re the only one I can count on to not actually drown today, you'll be our victim.” Aizawa begins to explain to the class. “Our victim will fall out of her boat and pretend to start drowning. Your job is to reach Y/n and save her before she drowns.”
“It takes roughly three minutes for you to lose consciousness when drowning, but it can only take seconds for you to actually drown.” Thirteen continues. “That means the victim may be under the water well before you can even reach them. We'll be trying this a few times. For the first attempt, Y/n will stay above water the entire three minutes. The second time, she'll start to go under at the halfway mark.”
You nod in understanding, glancing at your classmates. Some look confident while others look worried. You can't blame them. It's not like everyone has a quirk that works for this.
“Each group will have a small row boat available, and remember, our victims will have a boat in the water nearby.” Aizawa says. “I expect each and every one of you to pass this, especially after that stunt at the beginning of your summer break.”
“Yes, sir!” Everyone replies in unison as Thirteen holds up a familiar box.
“Alright, line up and draw a number for your pairs. You know the rules, no exchanges. You don't get to make exchanges in real life scenarios. Let's go.” Aizawa says.
You hang back as everyone begins to draw their numbers. Soon, everyone is paired up. Midoriya and Iida, Bakugou and Mineta, Tokoyami and Sato, Jiro and Sero, Todoroki and Mina, and Momo and Kaminari. Thanks to Aoyama being called away after lunch, there's an even number of rescuers.
“Now, in order to successfully rescue your drowning victim, you'll have to deliver Y/n back to land where a medic is waiting to treat her.” Aizawa explains, gesturing to Thirteen. “If you don't reach her within three minutes, you'll fail. You have eight minutes to get on shore for the medic or you also fail. I want you to treat her exactly how you would a real victim. Y/n, I want you to record the class on your helmet. We'll be grading performances based on how appropriate attitudes are on top of it. Obviously, the longer it takes to rescue her, the lower your grade.”
Everyone nods in understanding, and soon it's time for you to sail far out into the artificial lake to be rescued by your classmates...
