Our travels had continued. The agents were a lot more friendly than I had expected them to be. It was a relief to be honest.
I imagined that was because of Capitano relaxed and easy to get along with attitude. If it had been any other harbinger I could only see them being anxious and cautious.
They were even kind to me which really made the whole experience a lot better. Slowly I was beginning to get used to this kind of life. The fatui weren't that bad. Sure I didn't understand the Tsaritsa's motives yet but if I got to spend the rest of my time around Capitano and other nice people I wouldn't complain all that much.
The two agents led ahead of us as Capitano and I hung in the back. He stayed a few steps ahead as if shielding me from potential danger.
My mind was still reeling from the conversation earlier. I started to notice the little things. Things that I wouldn't have noticed if we hadn't spoken. For instance, whenever there was movement around us Capitano would first grab the hilt of his sword and then step in front of me. Although I was more than capable of handling myself the action caused my heart to race nonetheless.
It was very clear now, I was falling quickly and hard for this selfless man.
My ears burned at the thought and I could only hope he wasn't looking over at me.
Finally, night had approached and we had made it to the last known location.
"Here it is," One of the agents pointed toward a spot in the woods.
"We last saw them around this area before they disappeared. It was as if they had vanished."
Capitano nodded his head and I moved closer to check the spot out.
Focusing I tried to spot the elemental traces.
It took a little but eventually I was able to see it. Someone had indeed been here and they left a massive trace behind. There seemed to be some traces of pyro and electro energy.
I looked further ahead and noticed the traces seemed to split on either side. It seemed they tried to throw off their enemies by creating enough distance the lose them but not each other.
"They headed that way." I said pointing to the left.
"Indeed," Capitano replied proudly, "Thank you for your hard work agents. We'll take it from here. Please inform her majesty that a trail still exists and we will update her as soon as we've discovered something."
The agents acknowledged with a nod.
"Yes sir and thank you. Y/N," It was the agent who had spoken privately with me, "It was nice to meet you, good luck."
My heart fluttered wildly as only the two of us understood what 'good luck' meant.
A rosy tint bloomed on my cheeks, "T-Thank you! Take care of yourselves."
The agents left with a wave and now it was only Capitano and I. I hadn't realized it but there was a bit of tension now. The air felt suffocating and I could once again hear the sound of my heart thumping in my chest.
With all the courage I had I looked over at Capitano.
He looked back at me in an instant and the words that I had wanted to say caught in my throat.
"Shall we follow the trail for a bit before it gets too dark?" Capitano asked breaking the heavy silence.
I nodded slowly and Capitano took the lead. Following after him the two of us headed down the path.
We used the light from the setting sun to guide us onward.
Seeing the elemental traces was fun. It was like looking for pieces of a puzzle. These abyss creatures were not well versed in hiding the energy though. This made it a lot easier for us to follow.
Even if the energy disappeared for a few steps we'd eventually find it elsewhere.
"Are they not trained to better hide themselves?" I asked as we continued on.
"Well they do have the training but not everyone can see elemental traces. They probably assumed that those tracking them couldn't and didn't bother. Unfortunately for them we can."
I gave a knowing nod, "That explains it but still if this item is so precious wouldn't they want to take precautions?"
"Maybe, but it could be laziness as well. Regardless of the reasons they didn't. Which means sooner or later we'll catch up to them." He responded.
He was right. The abyss couldn't go on forever either. They had to rest as well at some point. We'd have to catch up to them though. Which meant tomorrow we would need to quicken our pace.
"Lets start looking for a cave to settle in for the night."
With that in mind the two of us continued on to find somewhere to settle down.
