We had moved quickly following the trail of that blue light. I couldn't remember the last time we had taken a break, Although I was tired, we had both silently agreed to keep going for as long as we physically could. If this was going to be a dead end we needed to know as soon as possible to get back on track.
However, if it wasn't. That meant we'd catch up with them in no time.
Knowing we could be close we tried to keep quiet as we moved. Capitano was faster than me and a lot bigger, so hearing no sound coming from him was weird. You would expect such a large man to make a lot more noise when moving. In this case, it was a lot better for us.
After a bit more running I started to sense something rather off. My steps slowed a bit and I looked around. There was a strange smell coming from somewhere near by. It wasn't just the smell that was strange but the way my body reacted. It felt suffocating.
Capitano slowed as well and looked back.
"Are you alright?"
I nodded, "Yea... just something strange up ahead... I feel a little light headed."
"What direction?" He asked.
I pointed toward where the source was coming from. It was a bitter smell one I had never encountered before.
Capitano nodded his head, "That must be strong abyssal energy which means..."
The both of us knew what that meant.
Capitano reached into his pocket and pulled out a black handkerchiefs. I gratefully took it from his hands putting it up against my nose to try and block out the smell.
"You'll get used to it in time. If it gets too much just tell me."
I nodded and the two of us began to move at a slower pace. Capitano stuck by my side checking on me every so often to ensure I wouldn't pass out.
The closer we got the stronger the smell became. How anyone could stand this was beyond me. Perhaps it was because I wasn't from this world that it was stronger.
Before we could take another step, Capitano roughly grabbed my arm and pulled the two of us behind a tree. My back hit his chest with a thump and his grip on me tight. I held in a gasp my heart pounding.
One arm wrapped around me protectively. His head tilted to the side and I followed his actions.
Past the trees there seemed to be a couple of cliffs and on the other side of those cliffs were some caves. Just on top of those cliffs were three members of the abyss.
None of them had noticed us yet. There were two mages and one abyss herald.
They stood facing staring out at the caves across from them. As I looked closely at the abyss herald I noticed something in the palm of its hand.
There was a box....
My eyes lit up and I started to get a little excited.
This was it! That was what the Tsaritsa had been looking for!
I glanced up at Capitano and pulling the handkerchief down I mouthed the word 'box'. His eyes flashed over to the herald and he nodded his head upon seeing it.
I mouthed some more words, 'What should we do?'
Capitano looked back at them trying to quickly assess the situation. After a few seconds he looked back and mouthed some words of his own.
'First wrap the handkerchief around your mouth so it stays in place. Aim for the mages, I'll get the herald."
I nodded fixing the handkerchief so that it stayed around my mouth. When I was ready I looked back up at Capitano.
'3... 2... 1...!'
The both of us moved swiftly out from the trees. My eyes locked on the cryo mage and I summoned a beam of water shooting it straight toward the mage. Our appearance had stunned the abyssal creatures and they didn't react as quickly.
The water beam struck the cryo mage sending them flying into one of the caves across the cliff.
When the abyss creatures finally figured out what was going on it was already too late.
Capitano swept in sending a barrage of icicles toward the other mage. The icicles sent the second mage flying and immediately afterwards Capitano brought out his sword. He swung down the ice radiating off of it.
The herald had finally recovered though and just nearly missed Capitano sword.
It had teleported behind him. Two swords appeared in the heralds hands.
"Interesting..." The words from the heralds mouth were calm.
His eyes flickered over to Capitano and then myself, "I was not expecting her to send a Harbinger. No matter, I shall get rid of one nuisance first."
Instead of going after Capitano, the herald's attention focused on me.
