The day after Capitano had made up his mind, the two of us started the long journey back to the capital of Snezhnaya.
The first couple of days were difficult. I had already known I wasn't going to be able to keep up with Capitano's pace and walking through the snow had proved it to be true. We had to stop multiple times and Capitano was forced to slow. However, he never once complained. He'd help me out when my legs didn't want to move further and he made sure to keep a close eye on me.
No one had yet to come steal the box from us. Nor had we encountered anyone from the abyss again. It was a little surprising especially considering how important the box seemed to be.
There was also the possibility that nobody was brave enough to challenge Capitano. If the herald couldn't defeat him it would take a lot more than a mere grunt to take him down.
I had offered Capitano the box but he insisted I hold onto it. He wanted me to be the one to present it to her, as he said it was I who had gotten my hands on it.
To an extent, I did appreciate that. It had taken a hell of a lot to get my hands on this and I had a condition to handing it over as well. Capitano probably suspected it as well but he did not make mention of it.
We had been walking for awhile now before finally coming to a stop.
The capital was about another 45 minutes now. I could feel my stomach stirring from a mixture of nervousness and excitement.
"Do you think she knows we succeeded?" I asked sitting down on a nearby rock.
Capitano looked through our supplies and gave a nod.
"Yes, I'm certain shes found out."
"Do you think the rest of the harbingers are aware as well?" I questioned.
"Yes. I would not be surprised if some of them have been observing through other fatui members."
Capitano stopped searching through the bag before coming back to sit beside me.
"You think they'd be that nosy? Don't they have their own missions?"
He nodded again, "Indeed they do but they probably found it interesting. Im sure they decided to watch and see how things would play out."
I shook my head.
The harbingers really did all act in their own unique ways. Out of all of them, I was relieved to have been put with Capitano.
A lot had changed since we were in that cave. The two of us seemed to relax more around each other and Capitano was even more open as we spoke.
At night, the two of us would sleep all huddled up and during our walks Capitano would hold my hand. His love language seemed to be small acts of physical affection and I was all here for it.
He would also take his mask off in the evening for a bit. I felt giddy every time. Unfortunately, he would not leave it off for long, but I did understand. He was just concerned that someone else would come along and see.
"Hopefully she'll trust me a little more after this." I mentioned.
Capitano looked over at me, "She will but I must ask how do you plan to proceed in the future?"
I glanced up at him a little confused, "What do you mean?"
"Well, once your mission is finished she will allow you to act on your own. I'm sure she will appoint you to other ventures in the future, but otherwise you'll have the freedom to do as you please."
I blinked in surprise, "Wait but what if I run off and never come back?"
Capitano didn't say anything right away.
All he did was stare back at me.
Then in a soft voice he asked, "Will you?"
My heart skipped a beat and I clinched my hands.
I had no reason to stay with the fatui before but now things were different. Capitano was my reason and motivation...
It wouldn't be possible for me to leave now not after everything that had happened. Leaving the fatui meant I'd have to leave him as well.
"No," I answered with a smile, "I don't think that would be a possibility anymore."
Capitano's shoulders relaxed and I could tell he was pleased.
His hand that had been resting on the rock slipped over lightly grasping my own. I gave a small squeeze in reassurance while looking at him.
I would not abandon Capitano. Even if it meant staying and working with the fatui.
"I'm glad to hear." He said in a low tone.
I couldn't help but smile.
"Then there is something I'd like to ask." He continued.
"Oh?"
Capitano squeezed my hand in return.
"You may do as you please, regardless you will still be my woman. But I'd like for you to join me from here out." He said in a serious tone.
My stomach was doing flips and I couldn't contain the smile breaking out on my face, "Really?"
He nodded, "I know you're a capable woman and you can handle yourself. I see potential in you and I know with time your skills will develop further. However, as you are my lady, I'd also like to keep you safe. The best way to do that is to have you by my side."
It meant a lot to hear that from him. I had figured I wouldn't get to see him much if the two of us had our own separate missions in the future but this was a great solution to that problem.
Enthusiastically I nodded my head, "I'd love to."
He nodded and standing up he pulled me up from the rock with him.
"Good. I will inform her of your decision when we return."
It seemed Capitano was more interested in returning now. He must have been waiting to ask.
Capitano dragged me along his hand still intertwined with mine. I strayed behind him still trying to get my footing.
"Thank you."
The words caught me by surprise.
I looked back up at Capitano but could only see him from behind.
I could not see the expression on his face but I was certain it was a mix of joy and relief.
