Taylor's POV

"Chief, here's all the files on those arson cases you wanted," Greene says as he comes into my office.

"Thanks," I say as I pick one up.

"Why are you wanting all of these?"

I shake my head and look at Wes. "I just can't decide why my family and Alex's family are the ones Katie was the most interested in. It doesn't make any sense. You and Liam are firefighters too, so I don't understand why you weren't bugged as heavily. Jake wasn't at all, so it has nothing to do with Ellie's family. It has to do with me and Alex specifically."

"Why would Alex have anything to do with arson cases, though?"

"I have no idea. There's been a few times I turned a case over to him when I was getting nowhere with the Commissioner. I'm just grasping at straws at this point, but I refuse to sit on my ass and wait for the FBI. This is our family."

Wes looks at me hard and nods.

"Give me a stack, Chief."

I smirk as I had him about 15 files.

"Ugh. This is going to take all night," he grumbles as he settles in his chair and starts flipping through the first file.

We work for a good four hours on the stack of files.
We're not finding anything suspicious.

Suddenly Wes sets a file down.

"What?"

He looks at me hard. "This case is weird."

I take it and search the file. I remember this one. Last year, there was a fire in a nursing home. We were able to get all the residents out, but it was really close. A couple of them ended up dying from smoke inhalation. The fire started in the administration office. It was by an outlet, so it looked like an electrical fire. It wasn't though. We found the ignition point, and it was covered in accelerant.

After the investigation was done, it was still ruled an electrical fire. I was pissed, so I took it to Alex. Alex and his unit somehow figured out who it was and nailed him. He's spending 15 years in prison.

"The guy is in jail," I say, shrugging my shoulders.

"It's the only one that the two of you worked together on, though. Both of your names are on the report."

"You think it's related?"

Wes just shrugs.

I get out my phone and call Alex.

He answers the phone, and I can hear crying.

"Hello?"

"Uh, hey man. Everything ok?"

"With me, yeah. Not with Colton. Is this an emergency or can I call you back?"

I chuckle. Only Alex would answer the phone as he's disciplining his child.

"Everything's fine, but once you're done spanking him, come to the station."

"Ok. I'm almost done. Give me 20."

"See ya man," I say as I hang up.

I start laughing.

"Tell me he did not stop a spanking to answer your phone call," Wes laughs.

I nod. "Yup. I must be pretty special," I snort, shaking my head. Poor Colton. He sounded miserable.

When Alex gets here, I smirk at him. "I could have waited, dude."
