Chapter 415. Shift Change

" Zzzz... Zzzz...."

/ Snore!/

"Honestly, how can she sleep so peacefully and loudly while we're moving into enemy territory?"

" That's just how tired she is. Maybe it has to do with the spells she used back during the fight? She's also been spending a lot of her time meditating. She might just be mentally drained from that. I know I get like that if all I do is meditate all day."

Jaime answered my question. We were currently 4 hours into our journey, Jaime and I were sitting in the back with a sleeping Laura as Ash drove the carriage. What Laura wished for came to fruition, the clouds were covering the sun now. The somewhat sunny day had become overcast quite quickly. Laura was more than happy to see the clouds moving between us and the sun as she passed the reins to Ash and leaned her back on a folded-up robe that was between her and a wooden box that was in the carriage. The day was going by quickly even though all we were doing was traveling down a dirt road. We look back out of the carriage every now and again to see the men more or less on edge always looking around thinking a Demon will be right around the corner. We offered to use the same spells that we placed on our carriage to theirs, but they refused for whatever reason.

" Okay! Lucy! You're up!"

Ash called for me at the front of the carriage, I proceeded to get up from my sitting position to my knees and scoot myself to the front of the carriage Once I was there, Ash was happy to hand the reins to me.

" Thank God! I thought it was going to start raining while I was driving!"

" Oh, so I guess I'm going to get soaked?"

" Probably! Don't worry, we have parkas in the back. I'll grab one for you!"

 " Thanks..."

I looked up at the overcast sky and realized that it might not have been the best day to set out for this operation.

" Don't bother!"

" Hu-"

/ BANG! THOOM!/ 

Just as Ash was about to grab me a parka, Jaime told us to not bother. A giant bang and explosion sound came from our right-side flank. By the time I tried to find out what Jaime was talking about, the large sounds had already answered any further questions. We were under attack!

" Ash, stick with Jaime and protect her as she casts spells! Lucy! You're with me! Let's go now!"

Laura woke up and pulled her spiked metal mace from her belt. We all quickly got out of the carriage and were surprised by what we saw. It was like a wave of fire had shot through the forest and cleared out a section of it.

" What... Happened?"

" It's the spell Jaime and I used. It's a basic defensive spell that catches and returns projectile attacks. I combined it with a buffing spell of mine, it looks like it was some kind of fire or lightning spell that attacked us. Maybe I went a little too far on the buffing of the spell? Doesn't matter now, we need to find any of the enemies that are still around."

" What was that!?"

Just as we were about to head out to see what was left of the enemy force, Jessie came running up to us with panic in his voice.

" We were attacked."

" We know that! We saw the fire spell that attacked you, what I mean is what was that beam of fire that came out of your carriage!? Jaime doesn't know how to use such a spell, right!?"

" It's due to a defensive spell mixed with a buff I placed on it. We need to focus on the enemy now. Let's go."
