John Ericsson's Point Of View
" We're on course, so far I can't say anything's wrong, besides the glares that have made their way to you as you lead us down the roads."
" Good, so we'll arrive at the Western Border by tomorrow night, right?"
" Yes, if all goes accordingly, Marquess Drake."
I was speaking to Lieutenant George in my quickly put up tent as we finally stopped traveling for the day, it's been 3 days since we started heading back. The tent was occupied by Sarah, Anna, Ruby, Flare, Edmon, Lieutenant George and myself currently. His reports weren't anything I wasn't expecting. Of course the troops weren't happy with my decision, since we started walking back as soon as the sun rose the morning after the battle. Like I suggested, Lieutenant George fed them a lie and they marched, they did it with a sense of annoyance, but as soldiers they marched all the same. Didn't stop the glaring, which I've noticed over the past 3 days... But the real issue was the conflicts brewing with my troops from Paradise not taking kindly to the Western Border's men. I actually had to call a meeting on the 1st day to make sure that everyone understood that infighting would not be tolerated. Thankfully, the troops from Paradise listened to me. They've been spending their days biting their tongues, but they're doing it. Sarah, Anna and Ruby's group that serve as our personal guards however... Well... It's definitely hard to keep them calm.
" Continuing on from that, the back guards report that nothing out of the ordinary has appeared in their sights."
" Good... Let's hope it stays that way."
" We're a day away, so I'd say it's a pretty safe bet to say that we're safe, Marquess Drake."
" I hope that you're correct, Lieutenant George."
Lieutenant George was a veteran of quite a few battles, I'm sure his words about this would usually calm people down, but I don't know why... Just something feels... Off about this. I can't shake the feeling that I'm like a rabbit waiting for a wolf to attack me... Either way, I shook the feeling off of me and I decided to focus on the next most important topic.
" What about the prisoners?"
" The prisoners? What about the elves?"
" How are they holding up?"
" They're fine, I have 2 trusted subordinates overlooking them to make sure they're treated fairly, as you requested. They eat the same food that's prepared for the rest of the troops and they're guarded every minute of every day."
" Good... That's good at least. I'd rather them not cause a fuss.. Also this means that the cuffs have been working over the course of the last few days without problems... Queen Aqua and Queen Crystal will be happy to hear about that when we get back home."
" Honestly, I'm somewhat shocked by their behavior. Sure, the rank and file troops that were captured are one thing, but the 2 leaders that were captured have been unusually quiet. How did you break them so easily, Marquess Drake?"
" Break them? I didn't do anything like that, I just beat Lee in a fight and cuffed him. As for Morgan, Edmon and Lieutenant Bobby were able to defeat him and I was able to cuff him from that. Besides that, all I did was heal them the day before we set off on this journey back to the Western Border."
" Well, whatever you did, that seemed to make them completely submissive."
" I doubt that."
" Huh?"
I quickly spoke up to the idea that they were broken or that I was able to curb their desires to fight, from fighting with them both, I know they're not going to give up. If I had to guess... They're just biding their time, like I did. And the fact that they don't think they need to kick up a fuss tells me that I'm not wrong to be worried about Fairsword... We need to get to the Western Border tomorrow no matter what.
