Chapter 524. Panic Can Ruin Everything

" Okay, looks like we're all set up to go... I guess it'll be best for Edmon to take half of the men to the right and we'll go to the right, Lieutenant Bobby."

" As you command, Lord Matthew."

" Let's get on with it then."

" Good, break the men up and let's set out. Remember not to cross the section of the valley I spoke about."

" Right."

Why does he not want us to meet up with the enemy? Does he think I'll just stand by and let the Elves gain even more ground? We've lost too many men already... That must be why he's going with me; he wants to keep me under his thumb during this operation... He doesn't want me trying anything that might be better than any of this ridiculous wait and see what happens-type of plan he's made. Well enough of this. I'm a Proud Demon Warrior and I'm not just going to sit by and let him get our troops or me killed. The first chance I get, I'm going to make sure no Elves are able to take another Demon's life. And I don't give a damn what he says about it!

" Lieutenant George, get the men ready, we leave soon. We need to make it to the checkpoint before the afternoon."

" Yeah, I know, Sir..."

He called out to me, maybe he thinks I'm allowing my thoughts to drift like he has, but no. I'm quite focused. I quickly go and gather the best 250 troops that were under our care at the moment. With that, we took off, walking behind this small human...

" You grabbed quite a strong looking bunch, Lieutenant, I'm sure they'll be perfect for what's to come."

" What is to come exactly, Sir?"

" Hm? Didn't I explain this to you already? It's a trap."

" How is gathering 250 Demons of a force of 2000 your idea of a good trap?"

" Hm? No, you misunderstand me, the troops aren't the trap, the trap is here."

" Here... In the valley?"

" Yes."

" But it's a normal valley?"

" Yes, it is... I suppose the only real difference from a regular valley is just how pretty it all is, the trees and plants are nice. Honestly, it's just missing a few streams of clean water, and I wouldn't mind spending a few weeks here as a vacation."

" Is that what you think about when you see the untouched landscapes of the neutral zone? Where you could build a cabin?"

" Don't you? Wouldn't it be nice?"

" I've never thought much of vacations, I'm more focused on getting stronger."

" Ah... I suppose you do need that kind of mentality to climb the ladder to become a Lieutenant, wouldn't you?"

Great, now he's trying to connect with me... But his view on the world... It's too alien from my own... This is what I mean... A human and a Demon could never truly get along... Why would King Warrick and Queen Aqua even think about making him such a High-Ranking Noble... It makes no sense... Even if he is a Paladin. We continued to walk for quite some time, that was until we made it to a clear plain that seemed to serve as a halfway point between the lightly forested area we were in and the more arid and drier area that the Elves were approaching from.

" It's so strange to me..."

" What was that?"

The human mumbled something as he looked over the area. I looked behind me to see that our men were still in formation... What the hell did he say? My question seemed to catch his attention.
