I looked away from their shocked faces. This is their fault, they kept asking about it. Besides, it's not like keeping it a secret was actually a problem.
" Laura.... Are you joking with us right now?"
Lucy's voice seemed to lack emotion as she asked for my clarification. It's like she didn't just hear me say it to all of them.
" No, I'm not... John lived with my family since he was 9!"
" And... You never said anything about this?"
Jaime spoke this time. I looked at them without shame as I nodded to her words.
" But... THAT'S NOT FAIR!"
Ashley said what they all were thinking no doubt.
" It's more than unfair! You're cheating by not telling us!"
" You never asked Jaime."
" Wait! That's why you never wanted to go anywhere! And wait! What about that summer where your parents went on vacation for a month!?"
" We were all alone for that month, what about it?"
Lucy seemed to be connecting dots in her head, but it doesn't matter. I'll answer all their questions honestly. It's not like anything would change now anyways.
" Wait, we visited your house before! Why wasn't he there? We even stayed till dinner with your parents!"
" He helped my Uncle with some work that day. He ended up staying with my Uncle and Aunt for the weekend that time."
" Oh, now you're just full of information, aren't you?"
Lucy nearly growled out that quip of hers. I didn't like her tone, but it was normal for her to be angry. But I refuse to apologize. They can be as outraged as they want, but it doesn't change the fact that they would do the exact same thing if they were in my position. They can be angry for now, but they'll eventually come to terms with it. And they'll realize just how big of a position I have in John's life. That should keep them in check.
" You had him work that day? Why not just have him be there? It's not like we would've minded?"
Ashley seemed to have some complaints, but I could see the selfish reason behind wanting to know about John.
" Maybe not, but could you honestly say that you wouldn't attempt to stop by my house everyday from that point on?"
" We'd need to if we wanted to make up the fact you've been spending everyday with him!"
" My point exactly Ashley!"
She made my point for me!
" What are you trying to say, Laura? Why would us stopping by your house be an issue? It's not like we would stay for long? We wouldn't bother your parents too much, right?"
" You'd bother him. Do you have any idea how much time he devoted to studying?"
" Well... He was always studying, until Luke bothered him, right? But that doesn't mean he didn't deserve to have some fun every now and again, right!?"
" That's besides the point! When he wants to have fun, he'd watch a movie with me, or play a game with me! Or take a walk with me!"
As I began to list all of the ways John could relax, I was stopped after only 3 by Lucy of all people interrupting me.
" Do you notice how all of those options involves you!?"
" Well... Why shouldn't they?"
" Have you ever thought that you were just forcing him to do what you wanted?"
