About an hour and a half later, Will was at Peter's house, sitting on the couch in an attempt to relax while the retired superhero typed at his computer. "So you're saying this girl not only knows your secret identity, but revealed herself to you? All while promising to not reveal your double life as Spider-Man?" Peter questions, trying to understand this new villain's motives.
Will nods his head. "That's what she told me at least. I could tell she wasn't lying. There was something in her voice." He told him as he looks up at Peter. "Go ahead. Tell me I screwed up. She knows my secret identity, and she knows how I fight."
Peter takes his protege's shoulder with a gentle expression. "It's not your fault kid. Back in the day, Green Goblin always knew who I was under the mask. Sometimes it happens to the best of us." He says to him gently before going back to his computer. "Now.....you also mentioned that she was able to copy your fighting techniques, and seemed to fight like other members of the Avengers?" He then asked his protege, confirming his suspicion.
Will walks up to his mentor, leaning against the chair. "That's right. I don't suppose you know how she did that." He said, trying to lighten up the mood and atmosphere.
"A photographic memory......this girl can see a move once and copy it to the very last detail." Peter answered as he typed on his computer. "Only one other person had that unique trait." He pulls out a file of a man. "Anthony Masters..the original Taskmaster....."
Will leans closer on the chair to get a better look. "I've heard of him.......if Rose was able to have a photographic memory like his, do you think that means Rose is his daughter?" He asked, praying on some level that he was wrong.
The retired superhero sighs as Will guessed that. "I think we both know that's most likely. But it seems she goes under a different last name. Makes sense to so she's not easily traced back to her father." He tells the curly haired boy. "I'm betting her father sent her to work for Fisk so they can get rid of Spider-Man. Taskmaster is a gun for hire after all. Must want her to be the next generation, or for her to partner up with him so they can earn double the amount of money at double the time." He theorized.
Will nods in agreement, pondering thoughts in his head. "I'm also willing to bet that she's not the only one in that family taking over the family business. If the original Taskmaster is teaching one daughter, who's to say he wasn't doing the same for all other kids.... assuming he had other kids. Knowing his greedy ass, he most likely did to up the amount of money he earns exponentially." He said, coming up with theories himself.
"You're probably right kid..but for now let's worry about this Rose girl first. After all, she's the one after you." Peter reminded Will gently, typing on his computer intently. "In any case, there's no evidence of Rose being related to Taskmaster other than the fact she has a photographic memory, and that isn't enough to prove anything."
Will nods in agreement, wishing he that there was a way to prove his theory. But then he got an idea. "Mr. Parker. Can you do me a favor and pull up any photos on the original Taskmaster? Specifically if there are any with him without his mask?" Will requested, his voice somewhat frantic.
Peter looks at his protege with confusion, trying to understand his thought process. "Uh.....sure I can try, but I don't see how that's going to be any help." He tells him as he pulls up multiple photos of the unmasked original Taskmaster.
Once he sees the photos, the curly haired rookie superhero looks at them analytically, as if studying the details. Of course, he was in no hurry as he studied every detail he could of Anthony Masters.....every inch of his face. Every angle, every detail, every hair, even every wrinkle if he could. Certain details of his face.....Rose shared in common with him, but not enough to be solid enough proof. "Okay. Now I just need you to zoom in on his eyes for me?" He requested, which his mentor immediately obliged and zoomed in on Anthony's eyes. The curly haired boy immediately studied his eyes quietly, noticing something familiar. "Now for the file of Rose I was able to get during our fight." Peter pulled up the photo he requested. "Last but not least.....a retinal scan on both of them to confirm the DNA match."
The retired superhero's eyes widen in shock and disbelief at his protege's quick thinking. Why didn't he think of that???? He didn't have time to think about that now, since he had to do as Will asked. So he started, and his computer immediately started the retinal scan on both of their eyes. Within a minute, the scan was completed. A 100% match..... meaning that Anthony Masters was Rose's father.
"I knew it....." He muttered to himself. "It was very subtle, and I had literally zero evidence to go off of. But when I saw the original Taskmaster's mask, and compared it to Rose's, I noticed something familiar. The way their eyebrows furrow under the mask......it's a very subtle detail but it's the exact same.....not just a photographic memory type thing. As if it was a trait. I just needed that DNA test to confirm my suspicions." He explained to Peter, feeling proud of his accomplishment. "What I know about Rose from school? Her last name is Valentina. It's like you said. She's trying to assure she can't be traced back to her father so he doesn't get caught and arrested by S.H.I.E.L.D. Like father like daughter I suppose. But I don't know about anyone else in the family......for now, I gotta go find her, or at least some other criminals. Odds are I'll run into her again." He told him as he hurries out, swinging into the city with grace and agility.
The retired superhero watched as Will rushed out then swung away, amazed by his quick thinking. 'Son of a bitch.....just when I thought he couldn't impress me more than he already has....he finds a way to do better.......and impress me more.....' He thinks to himself, turning his chair around at his computer. He then pulls out an old photo of his wife on the desk, staring at it with a sad smile. 'You would've loved this kid Mary Jane.......not just because of how he takes over as Spider-Man so I wouldn't have to.....but because of how he does it.....a smart kid.......a good hearted kid who needed guidance.,.....I hope that wherever you are up there, you're watching over us both.......and can be proud of us both......' He thinks to himself, setting the photo down quietly. As he does, the older male takes one last look at the photo before looking at his computer with a more determined look, typing on his computer to see Will's point of view. "Back to work."
(Editor's note: another chapter done. The attention the book is getting has been unreal to me and undescribably appreciated! Don't worry. We're not quite done with this book yet. I just had to express how much I appreciate everyone! We hope you're enjoying so far! :3)
