beamerboyx requested this and it's super cute
I'm sorry if like how people speak sound a bit weird - I write these when I watch shows and it goes from Dr Phil to Good Omens and I tend to subconsciously copy speech patterns - so excuse that
EDIT: TW BLOOD
Dick was silent. He never spoke a word. He hadn't since his parents made their last appearance. The last day they ever lived. Bruce had only ever known him as such. A silent orphan. He'd been that way for months even when he was fostered. His therapist said he could be mute for the rest of his life. There wasn't really a way to gauge these types of things was how they put it. They said to be patient. So Bruce was patient. He didn't push for Dick to speak and eventually figured out how he expressed what he wanted. As Alfred came to know, it was all in the eyebrows.
To make going to school easier, Bruce taught Dick basic sign language. All the things he needed for day-to-day living. So Dick never really had the need to speak. He would make noises sure. If you knocked past him, he'd squeak quietly. But he wouldn't say a word. Even when he really wanted to. Though that was probably a good thing. His inner monologue could be quite sassy at times. It made expressing himself hard sometimes. He could sign what he meant or he could write it down but he always felt like it was missing something. Like it needed his voice to seem more genuine. He wondered if other people who had once spoken but now didn't felt like that. There weren't any in his school and Bruce didn't have any want to get him set up online. Too many horror stories that he'd personally investigated. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be a faceless predator online that made one fateful Thursday a horror story. This villain most certainly had a face. In fact, he had two.
The day ran like clockwork. Dick had liked that aspect of school. It made things easier to deal with since he knew what would come next. He knew where he'd go, he knew how it would go out and he knew where to go afterward. He'd get anxious about a few things but he could make sure he was well prepared for that. English, History, History, Math, PE. Same thing every Thursday. As usual, he left the school in his PE clothes and waited in the pickup zone for the same black limo that always picked him up. He waited patiently, wasting some time by counting the number of red cars or trying to work out which cars belonged to which pupil. Bruce taught him a thing or two about profiling so he just applied it to stave off boredom.
A man he was unfamiliar with getting out of a car he'd not seen before. He raised an eyebrow as they walked over, seemingly coming towards him for something. He got out a card, something he'd made in therapy, that said he was mute and could only sign. They were probably just asking for directions or something of the sort. To avoid eye contact with the man, he looked around for someone to watch. There were only three other kids around. Maybe there was traffic. At least he could direct the man to someone else if he didn't know sign language.
"Richard Grayson?" the man asked when he got about a foot away. The acrobat nodded, caught off guard that this person he'd never met knew his name. "I'm picking you up today. Bruce apologizes for the absence of his butler but I'm sure I can do a good job of getting you home," they continued. Dick felt uncomfortable immediately. Somehow he didn't trust that Bruce would send someone he didn't know to pick him up. He'd get a person he was familiar with to save him the anxiety-riddled ride home.
Unfortunately, he decided to ignore that feeling in the pit of his stomach. Bruce didn't need to get him someone he knew to spare him a few minutes of awkwardness. It was just a ride home. He shouldered his bag and nodded at the man, signalling he was ready to go. A smile grew across the older's face as he led him to the car. The windows were blacked out and the license plate had a look about it that looked off. He couldn't put his finger on what that was. The man was opening the car door when he heard,
