With the freedom of the manor dawning on Dick, Bruce soon realized just how much energy the child had. He could run around the garden for hours and hours before he finally got tired. He was an excitable child with boundless energy which often left Alfred wiped out by dinner time. Taking this into account Bruce suggested that he take Dick to the park. "Are parks like outside time in juvie?" the child asked rather innocently when he heard the suggestion. He couldn't remember a time where he went to the park before his parent's death but he did live on a circus ground so he was already in a pretty exciting place. "In a way, but there are more things for children like swings and slides," Bruce replied. He watched as Dick became excited and a grin grew on his face.
"Oh, it sounds great! Promise you'll take me?" he asked, tugging on the older's arm. Bruce chuckled.
"Alright alright, I promise I'll take you. How's this Friday sound?"
"Sounds great!"
The reason Bruce had chosen Friday was because it was usually the day he had the least work to do. His employees could handle most of the paperwork and he wasn't really needed so he normally took a half-day. This would mean that he'd be done for dinner time and could take Dick to the park after they'd both had something to eat and got ready. Then he'd be tired out for tea time and he'd fall asleep easier by the time he had to go to bed. Bruce had also read that mental stimulation such as going to the park could prevent restless nights so it was a win-win to get him out of the house. However, like everything in life, this was unpredictable. Usually doesn't mean always. On this fated Friday, he was swamped with work. An investor wanted a last-minute business meeting with him to talk over buying more shares so Bruce had to be there for that. The meeting lasted most of the morning which wasn't too bad since he was going to go at midday. What was bad was the paperwork and phone calls he had to make to all the other hands-on investors to let them know of the business decision. This lasted until three in the afternoon. Then there was a line of about five employees he needed to talk to which he was supposed to talk to in the morning waiting outside his door that he had to first apologize to then have an hour-long conversation with them about their departments, behavior, and production. Now it was eight at night. When he finally got home, there was no way he was taking Dick to the park unless he wanted both of them to get shanked by the hobo for drug money and cheap thrills.
He walked into the manor with a tired sigh and put his briefcase beside the door. Hopefully, Alfred didn't mind looking after Dick for the extra few hours. He heard the distant sound of cackling which he guessed was coming from the excitable little boy he didn't take to the park. He wanted to enjoy the sound, he really did, but right now anything that wasn't silence just irked him in the worst kind of way. Bruce went straight for the kitchen since he was starving and tried to message away the headache. As he walked, Dick ran out a room without looking and ran straight into his legs. He giggled giddily until he looked up and saw the furious expression of his guardian. He immediately moved away from the older with a terrified gulp. "For God's sake, Richard look where you're going!" Bruce yelled. "You're running Alfred ragged, can't you just calm down for five seconds?"
"Sir I don't think that's quite necessary-" Alfred attempted. He'd seen the poor boy tremble at how loud he was being shouted at for a simple mistake. He was only a child and he'd not been able to run around freely like this in Juvie. "No, I'm sick of this behavior! Now you go to your room and think about what you've done!" Dick nodded and ran up to his room as fast as he could.
"Now now, that was rather unnecessary," Alfred commented. He was honestly surprised that Bruce even had it in him to yell so loudly at the boy when he was clearly becoming distraught by it. "I'm tired Alfie and he shouldn't have been running around. Maybe this will make him think about it," Bruce responded. The butler hummed unconvinced of the method but he was sure he raised the man well enough that he'd realize that on his own.
