"Heading... towards... pipeline," crackled Slate's comlink as he sprinted alongside his brothers, flashlight gleaming against the inky black of the night.
He cursed at the broken microphone, slapping his hand against it twice to try and get whatever was out of place back where it belonged.
So far, all that he had been able to make out was that Commander Tano had killed three clones, and that she was armed and dangerous.
"Shoot... shoot!" was the next staticky order to come through.
Slate took a moment to look down at his weapon, making sure that it was, indeed, not set to the stun setting. This was his first big mission, and he did not want to mess anything up. He had a great deal of respect for General Skywalker after seeing how he valued the lives of his brothers just as much, if not more than, he did his own.
He was determined to prove himself as he fought under his command.
"West... central viaduct," another voice stated.
Aha, Slate thought, taking off in that direction.
There was a large explosion, and he then spotted the general, sprinting after his missing commander.
Slate followed carefully behind him, wondering if he was using the Force to make it easier to find her. He became even more confident with that theory when he saw the man pause for a moment to close his eyes, seemingly searching for his padawan's presence nearby.
Slate snuck along as he turned down another section, waiting to find a good angle to shoot the commander down before she could attack the general.
"Ahsoka," he began, his voice afraid.
Don't worry, General, I won't let you down.
"What are you doing?"
"You didn't even try to come and help me."
"They wouldn't let me in to talk to you!"
"You could have if you—"
Boom.
She looked down, gasping at the hole in her chest before stumbling forward into her master's waiting arms.
"Master?" she asked with a wet cough.
"No," he whispered, dropping to his knees with her securely in his lap, "No, no, no!" he roared, pressing a hand over the wound to make an attempt at stopping the bleeding.
"Master, please," she cried softly, grabbing at the hand on her chest. "I don't... wanna go."
"I won't let you," he said back, voice shaking. "I've got you, Ahsoka, I've got you."
Slate stood rooted to his spot as the general cried over the commander's dying body, her tiny hand clutched tightly in his own, pressing his lips to her head as he whispered meaningless promises to her.
"I believe you, I love you, I know it wasn't you, I'll prove it."
The sound of his heartbeat pounded in his ears as he fell to his knees.
No.
His blaster clattered loudly to the ground as the commander took her last breath.
Anakin screamed.
couldn't help but write this, i've just been in a silly goofy mood 🤪
(in all seriousness, the next chapter is really soft <33)
