Deena smoothed out the front of her blazer as she looked in the mirror of her room.
She couldn't believe that she was actually going to prom. And she was going with a date. The date being Sam and Sam being her girlfriend.
She would have never believed this could happen a year ago.
Now here she is, dressing up in the first time in forever and she loves the suit she's wearing.
She felt self conscious at first, to wear a suit as a girl at the prom. But she knew that she would have Sam by her side, and she could face people judging her that didn't even know her.
She took a deep breath and exhaled as she walked out her bedroom door and to her front door.
Sam was in the bathroom getting ready. She loved fashion and dressing up. And it had been months since she last did.
She looked at herself in the mirror for a moment after she was finished with putting on make up.
Deena's jaw dropped and then formed a huge smile on her face as Sam walked up to her to the front door. "Sam.. you're so beautiful. You're incredible."
As Sam got closer to Deena, she fell in love with the suit she was wearing. It was perfect, she had to thank Kate later she helping Deena.
"You look amazing and gorgeous and beautiful and perfect, Deena. I love you," Sam had a huge smile on her face as she kissed Deena.
"I love you too, I can't believe I'm doing this. Going to prom, I never thought I would," Deena took Sam's hand and led her out the front door towards her car.
"I can't really believe it either, you going to prom. But I'm so glad you are coming with me," Sam placed a kiss on Deena's cheek as Deena opened the passengers side door for Sam to get into.
Sam immediately reach for Deena's hand when she got into the car also, and intertwined their fingers.
Sam put in one of Deena's mixtapes in the car radio, and the song, 'Hey' by the Pixies played. The song Deena and Sam called their song.
Deena kissed Sam, then stared at her for a moment, thinking about their journey over the last few months and how she kept falling in love with Sam over and over again everyday.
As soon as Sam and Deena got out of the car and walked hand and hand to Simon and Kate, they started clapping and yelling for them, causing both of them to blush a deep red on their cheeks.
Simon, Kate, Deena and Sam all stood in front of the school as they got their picture taken. They were smiling and laughing the whole time.
Sam and Deena were nervous at first, being the only gay couple in the school, at least publicly. And being the only gay couple to go to prom ever at Shadyside.
They didn't view it as a political or social justice statement. They were in love and wanted to go to prom together to dance with each other and their friends.
Sam stopped Deena at the doorway of the front doors, "you don't have to do this, we can go. Are you sure you want to go in?"
Deena squeezed Sam's hand and smiled brightly at her. "I'm sure, Sam. Nothing else matters as long as I have you near."
The look of worry on Sam's face was replaced with joy and a huge smile on her face. She leaned forward and rested her forehead on Deena's.
"I love you, Deena Johnson, you're the best thing that has every happened to me. I'm proud to be your girlfriend," Sam spoke, closing her eyes for a moment as she did.
Deena tucked a few stray hairs of Sam's behind her ear with her free hand. "I love you too, Samantha Fraser. I can't wait to marry you. It can't come soon enough."
Sam kissed Deena quickly before pulling back with a bright smile on her face and led Deena into the building.
