Sam was stunned that Taylor even figured out how to call her hospital room.
"Taylor, I don't know. I really don't need to argue with anyone right now. And Deena is supposed to call me soon."
"I know I'm sorry, I won't be long. But you have to know."
"Fine, what do I have to know?"
"You know Riley that's in our physic class and does drums with Deena in band?"
"Yeah....why?" With the mention of Deena's name, Sam knew this wasn't going to be good.
"She told me that Deena and her have this on and off thing and they've had it all year. And when you were in the hospital last, right before prom, I saw Deena hugging Riley, like affectionately hugging, in the band locker room and the lights were out. And they were whispering and I saw Riley kiss her cheek. I didn't think much of it until I asked Riley about it. I swear to you. You can call Riley right now. It's 555-777-9898. I'm sorry Sam, but she's been lying to you this whole time. Has she lied before about huge things?"
Sam felt nauseous and out of breath, as if a truck just ran straight into her. "Y-yeah.."
"Ask her about the locker room. Call Riley. I'm sorry, Sam. You don't deserve this. I'm here if you need someone okay? I'll answer right away."
Sam hung the phone up then ran to the bathroom and threw up. After everything she had inside her came back up, Sam started sobbing into her hands.
She wasn't going to believe anything until she talked to Deena, but the possibility it could be true, devastated Sam.
After she calmed and washed up after puking, she worked up the courage to call Deena.
Deena, of course answered on the first ring with, "Sam?"
Sam shut her eyes tightly. She didn't want to see a world where Deena could possibly cheat on her if she found out it was true from the phone call.
"Why were you hugging Riley in the dark locker room? Apparently you were hugging her in a very affectionate way."
"What? What are you talking about?"
"You were hugging Riley in a dark band locker room right before prom?"
"I mean, yeah, but it wasn't like that. She just told me sorry about you and then hugged me."
"Did she kiss your cheek?"
"What? Sam what is happening?" Deena felt like her stomach was in knots.
"Dont ignore the question. Did she kiss your cheek?"
"Y-Yeah, but it all happened at once. It was so fast she just hugged me and did that in the same movement and then left. It was so quick I didn't even process it."
"Why the fuck didn't you tell me?"
"Sam, it was nothing. I never even thought about it since. I forgot about it."
Deena waited for an answer, she needed Sam to say something. They couldn't fight like this now.
"What happened? Did Riley call you or something?"
"No. I got a phone call saying how you two have been hooking up on and off for the past year. They told me that Riley told them herself."
"Sam, that's bullshit. That's not true. I'm not doing that. I've never been with Riley like that or liked her like that. She's lying. Sam I wouldn't do that to you. I'm so in love with you." Deena was enraged at Riley for starting this and lying.
"Sam. Please, this isn't what you think it is. I promise. I'm not lying."
"Yeah but you've lied before to my face and broke a huge promise before." Sam was so confused and hurt by all of this. She couldn't think. Her thoughts were spinning with all the what if's and how Taylor was right about the locker room and how Deena's lied to her before.
"Sam. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry but I would never cheat on you and I've never been with Riley. I promise that. I swear it. Sam please. I love you. Only you."
Sam felt the lump in her throat and knew she was about to start sobbing any second.
"Sam please. Don't believe her. It's not true. Who told you this? Was it Olivia? Or Sophie or Taylor?"
"It was Taylor." Sam but her bottom lip as she tried not to cry on the phone.
"See, Taylor has this crush or weird thing with you and is trying to get between us. Sam.. I would never do that. I would never do anything to hurt you."
Sam covered her mouth with her hand, she tried to choke back her crying to talk to Deena, "I..need some time to think. Just give me a minute....I-I have to go."
"Sam it's not true. Please believe me." Deena could hear Sam start crying on the phone right before Sam hung up.
She stood in the same spot and stared at the phone. She couldn't believe that this was happening and that Taylor got to Sam like this.
Deena felt like her world was falling apart around her now that Sam wouldn't talk to her and was hurt by how Taylor made her think Deena could cheat on her.
She fell onto the bed and wrapped her arms around Sam's pillow tight as she cried.
