Sam held Deena's hand and interlocked their fingers. Tonight felt like heaven to her.

This is how she wants it to be for the rest of her life.

Being with Deena made all the pain worth it. The cancer, the chemo, her mom, Olivia, Caleb and anyone else that tried to get between them.

They fought through it all and came out the other side even stronger.

She danced tonight with Deena. Deena in her suit and looking beautiful like she always has.

Deena whose face lit up the moment she saw Sam in her dress. Deena who held her hand every time she got sick.

Deena who fought for Sam when Sam gave up on herself and didn't have the strength anymore.

Sam who gave up but suffered in pain everyday for months to get better for Deena. She didn't want to, but Deena loved her so she stayed, only for Deena.

Sam who had awful, terrible parents growing up. Sam who held Deena's hand in public when she was terrified what her mom would do to her.

Sam who wanted a blue house and Deena who swore to give that to her.

"I'm going to go to the bathroom," Sam whispered as she pulled away from Deena, lightly kissing her cheek before she left.

This night had been perfect to Deena. She never thought she would get to go to prom.

In the same way other people did. She never thought she would have someone to go to prom with, let alone Deena actually wanting to go to prom.

But she wanted to give that to Sam. A prom that everyone else could have. Just because they were both girls didn't mean Sam couldn't go to prom her last year of high school.

A prom in which Sam didn't have to pretend to like a boy to have a date. A real prom. A prom with her girlfriend who she would die for and live for.

Deena stood against the wall of the hallway near where the bathroom was. She felt beautiful in her suit, perfectly made to match Sam's favorite color.

"There you are. I've been looking for you everywhere."

Deena's heart stopped in her chest as she saw Caleb turn the corner and face her. "What do you want?" Deena spat at him, raged engulfed her at the sight of him.

"You're the reason I got expelled. You fucked Sam up. Her mom told me all about it. You're the one that stopped me. You don't get away with it. My life in ruined because of you. Now I'm going to ruin yours."

Caleb pulled out a pistol that was in his pocket and aimed it at Deena.

One of the teachers came around the corner and stopped at the scene in front of him, Caleb pointing a gun at Deena. He was behind Caleb by a few feet and looked between the two of them trying to figure out what to do.

Sam froze at the doorway of the bathroom when she heard Caleb's voice. Her heart stopped when she heard Deena's voice next.

She peeked her head around the doorway, being careful not be seen. It took everything in her to not scream the second she saw the gun pointing at Deena.

The bathroom was between Caleb and Deena, Sam looked between them in horror. She had to do something.

Caleb pulls the trigger and the loud gun shot rings through the halls of Shadyside high school.
