"Why are we going home?" Sam asked her mom once they pulled on to her moms street.
"I have flowers I am taking for her room. I forgot to take them earlier when I was there." Her mom said. Sam noticed that her mom rarely showed emotions. And the ones she did show to anyone besides her family were fake to cover the lies her mom told.
Sam wanted to snap back to her mom about how she would visit her mom but not her own daughter, but she felt sorry for her mom since her own mother was dying. It's been years since Sam felt sorry for her mom.
"Come help me," Sam's mom ordered as she parked the car and got out.
Sam rolled her eyes and groaned but followed her mom like she always used to.
Sam's mom waited held the front door open for Sam which confused Sam, she's never done that before.
Sam walked inside then turned to her mom as she heard her mom lock the door behind them. "Why are you being weird? We are just going to leave in a second."
"Go to the kitchen." Sam's mom's face was stoic and stern as she ordered Sam.
Sam glanced back at her mom the whole time while she walked.
"Sammy," a voice said from behind Sam in the kitchen.
Sam's jaw dropped when she turned to see Olivia and Taylor sitting in the kitchen. "What the fuck?"
Sam looked back to her mom, "what the fuck is going on?" She knew now that her mother lied about her grandma. Something worse was happening and she knew then that Deena was right. She should have never stepped foot inside her mother's house.
"Samantha, I asked Olivia and Taylor to help you this year. To steer you in the right direction. You wouldn't listen to me anymore. But you had real friendships with these girls. They've been trying to help you." Sam's mom said as she stood in the doorway of the kitchen so Sam couldn't leave.
"What are you saying?" Sam asked, looking between the three of them and feeling nauseous.
"Sam, I tried to help you get away from Deena. Even from Simon and Kate too. But you wouldn't listen. I knew you believed that Deena cheated on you when I called you. But you let her back in so easily." Taylor said.
"I helped too Sam. And when I caught you in the bathroom with her. I came straight to your mom with Taylor. Something has to be done." Olivia spoke next.
"Taylor's father is the owner of the construction company Deena's father works, Peter Goode." Her mom said to Sam.
Sam was stunned at the three and what they were saying. How they all treated Sam was part of a plan they made together.
Sam wanted to run out. She had a feeling where this was going and she couldn't handle it without Deena. Just her mom saying Deena's name made her even more enraged.
"You stop seeing her. You stop hanging out with her. At school you will be next to Olivia at all times. You do that, and Taylor's dad won't fire her dad. He's a drunk every night after work. You know that. No one else will accept and deal with him once her dad fires him. He's all that Deena and Josh has. They depend on him for everything. They will go broke and with the money they have left he will waste it on booze." Sam's mom said and walked to Sam.
Sam felt lightheaded and hurt by what her mom was saying. That in order for Deena's dad to keep his job, she had to stop seeing Deena. Not just dating her, but talking to her and being around her.
"No. This isn't fucking right. You can't do this to me. I'm 18. I'm in love with her and she is with me. You couldn't do this. You can't fuck with a whole family." Sam's voice got louder as she spoke.
"Yes I can. And yes I will." Sam's mom said.
"I'm a Goode. My dad is cousins with the mayor and sherif. He can make no one in Shadyside hire him and then they will have no where to go. You really want to put Deena and her brother on the streets?" Taylor said, a smirk on her face as she did.
Sam was speechless. She felt like she had just been hit by a truck. She was out of breath and about to break down any second.
She knew the choice she had to make. It would break her heart and it would break Deena's but she had to make sure Deena's dad kept his job. It was more important to keep Deena and Josh okay and safe and in their house with their dad working.
"Got it Samantha?" Her mom said.
Sam nodded, still unable to speak.
"Perfect. I wish I could be at school to see her face tomorrow." Taylor said and moved to Sam to hug her while Sam stayed still and didn't move.
"I'll pick you up bright and early tomorrow, Sammy." Then Olivia moved down to whisper in Sam's ear. "Told you that you would regret it." Then Olivia patted Sam's shoulder and left with Taylor.
Sam remembered the day when Olivia caught Sam and Deena kissing in the bathroom. She called Sam a d*ke and Sam pushed Olivia out of the way hard enough she fell on the floor as everyone in the hallway watched. "You're going to regret that, Sammy." The Olivia's words that she was referring to now. And she was right, she regretted it. She regretted ever putting Deena at risk of her mom's cruelty.
