Deena sat on the edge of Sam's bed, holding Sam's hand with both of hers.
"Samantha, you have pneumonia. It might have been just a cold or small virus someone had around you but it quickly developed to pneumonia due to the low amount of white blood cells not being able to fight it. It's still early, there's only a small amount of the virus in your blood right now but it will grow soon."
Sam laid back in the bed, she knew what this meant and when she looked at Deena, she knew too with the look on her face.
Deena wanted to kill Sam's mom. In this moment as she learned that Sam had pneumonia and it was going to make Sam weak and sick again, if Sam's mom was where right now, she would take out all the anger she's built up or that woman.
"It's going to get worse soon. You'll have more symptoms and they will be extreme with your blood count right now. You'll develop a fever and we need to control that right away. So I'm taking you up to the ICU before it gets bad." The doctor looked between Deena and Sam's dad.
"I'm sorry to the both of you, I know you were by her side nonstop last time. But she can't have any visitors. She will be confined to her room and she won't have the energy to get out of bed soon."
Sam closed her eyes shut tightly. It was going to get worse soon and all she could was wait. Without Deena there. She wanted to scream and fight it but she knew it wouldn't help.
"I can stay in the room with her the whole time and not leave. If she's going to get that sick she needs someone." Deena pleaded with the doctor. She wouldn't be able to cope not being near Sam when she was going to be sick.
"Deena, I'm sorry but you can't." Sam's dad turned to Deena and Sam. "I'm sorry, I really am but you can't right now. It's for the best for Sam."
"How would you know? You're the one that brought Joan in the house." Deena wasn't going to hold anything back anymore, not when it came to Sam. If something happened to Sam because she got sick from her mom, she would never forgive him.
"I know and I'm sorry. She lied and completely did everything she told me she was going to do. But I can't change that right now." He sighed as he looked towards Sam. "I'm sorry Sam. I really am. But you don't have to worry about her anymore. I'll take care of it."
Sam felt sorry for her dad by how sad and defeated he looked. She knew her moms effect on him and how she could manipulate him so easily over the years.
"We need to take her now. You can bring her stuff that she wants to the desk and they will sanitize it then give it to her. I'll make sure she has a phone in her room."
Sam looked at Deena and they both immediately took the others face in their hands and leaned their foreheads on the other.
"I love you so much Sam. You have to call me all the time. You'll get through this and be so much more stronger soon. I know it. I promise. We will be together soon." Deena whispered to Sam, tears threatening to fall.
"I love you too Deena. I'll call you every chance I get. We will be together soon. I'm going to get stronger you're right. Don't forget about me." A few tears fell down Sam's cheeks as she spoke. She wasn't going to far away from Deena but it felt like a goodbye.
"Sam, I'll remember nothing else. I'll be missing you the whole time. I love you." Deena kissed Sam and didn't stop until Sam's dad spoke her name.
She watched as Sam said bye to her dad and then walked as far as she could behind Sam and the doctor before she was told she couldn't go further.
Sam was terrified as she made it to her hospital room in the ICU. She was slowly feeling worse by the second.
They both already missed the other.
Deena waited in her car in the hospital parking lot for two hours after Sam went into the ICU.
She was sitting in silence as she thought about Sam and her mom. She couldn't let Sam's mom get away with this.
Deena didn't know how much Sam's mom knew about how bad Sam could get sick. But she didn't care. She's already hurt Sam so many times for years, Deena had to do something.
She finally built up the strength to turn on her car and go home. Deena's never been patient, but all she could do was wait for Sam to get better. The only thing the brought her comfort was that Sam was in the hospital and they would help Sam as soon as she got sick.
But, waiting without being near Sam was going to be worst part. She had no idea how long it was going to take. And she was terrified that Sam would get bad enough that she wouldn't be able to call Deena.
As soon as Deena got home, she took a sweater out that Sam wore last and hugged it and laid in bed.
