"Holy shit, Deena. You talked to her. What happened?" Kate said when Deena met them at lunch. She could tell by Deena's face that she talked to Sam by how angry but also hurt Deena looked.

Deena had been an emotional mess all day since talking to Sam last night. And how Sam treated her this morning made it even worse.

Sam and Deena had classes together. And they sat by each other in each class. But today in every class she had with Sam, they got their partners switched around and Deena now sat on the other side of the room from Sam.

In each class, Deena kept her eyes on Sam the entire time. She was begging Sam in her head to look back at her. There were a couple moments when Deena looked up from her paper to Sam and Sam was already looking at her. But Sam turned away as soon as she met Deena's eyes.

She wanted to go home and scream into her pillow again but she needed to stay by Sam. Even though Sam was ignoring her, she couldn't leave Sam. She knew something had happened with Sam and her mom. But she was still hurt by Olivia saying awful things to Deena and Sam just standing there.

"She looked at me once. She said that I need to leave her alone and that it would put me at risk if I was seen with her. Which is what she said last night too. That it would put me and Josh at risk. It doesn't make any sense. She said I was a phase and that it's over." Deena looked across the cafeteria and found Sam with Olivia and Sophie and other cheerleaders and their boyfriends.

Deena's grip as she held onto her lunch try got stronger as she watched Sam.

"Deena, look at me. You're not paying attention. I don't know what's going on with her. We all know it's her mom and somehow Olivia is involved. I'll talk to Olivia during chem, I have that with her." Kate said. She was just was confused as Deena was about Sam's behavior.

"Oh, shit," Simon said as he looked over at Sam's table.

Deena followed his gaze and looked back to Sam. She saw another football player sit next to Sam and he wrapped his arm around Sam's shoulders as he spoke.

Deena gritted her teeth then broke a piece off the tray she was holding onto as she watched the guy touch and lean into Sam.

"Wow, lesbian hulk." Simon said as he reached to move the tray from Deena so she didn't do anymore harm to it.

Deena stood as she kept her gaze on Sam. She started to walk to Sam when Simon held onto her arm and pulled her back.

"Don't, Deena. It's not worth a football player. She never cared about them before. You know how fast she dumped them and hated when they touched her. She's already leaning away from him. Don't risk your future on that douche bag."

Deena tore her eyes from Sam and back to Simon as he spoke.

"He's right. Why don't you go home Deena? I'll talk to Sam later after school. After I talk to Olivia."

"I can't. She won't talk to me but I need to see her. I won't know where she is or how she's doing once she leaves school so I have to stay. I have classes with her." Deena knew that Kate would argue it but Deena got up and threw her tray away then left the cafeteria.

Sam was focused on her carrots and fake smiling at Olivia's story she was telling the table. She felt an arm around her back, at first she hoped it was Deena's, then she heard the voice next to her as he leaned into her ear.

"So, mind if I make you straight again?" The douche bag asked with a smirk on his face.

"U-Uh.." Sam swallowed hard. She forgot how painful it was to fake flirt with boys.

"No. I'm good but t-thanks for the offer."

The guy laughed, "it still stands whenever you want it."

The last class of the day, Sam had with Deena and there wasn't anyone else in the class that were friends with Olivia. Sam wanted to tell Deena. But she knew that Deena would fight for her. That Deena would bust into her moms house and rescue her. She wanted that so badly, but if Deena did that, then Taylor would get her dad to fire Deena's dad.

Her mom called the school this morning and requested Sam to sit as far away as possible from Deena in every class. So far she switched seats in all her classes but there was still the last class of the day they had together.

When Sam walked in the room, everyone was in their regular seats and Sam was the last one, so Sam went to her desk that was right next to Deena's.

She couldn't look at Deena she kept her head down to look at the textbook the teacher was talking about. If she made eye contact with Deena by being this close to her, she would give in.

Deena was grateful that the teacher didn't switch seats like the rest of the classes today. She watched Sam walk in with her head down then sit next to her.

Being this close to Sam and Sam ignoring her was painful for Deena. And Sam felt the same pain also that she had to ignore Deena and not talk to her like she longed to.

The front of the class was talking about a question the teacher asked so it was loud enough that Deena could quietly talk to Sam without anyone knowing.

"Sam....please don't do this," Deena faced Sam.

Sam shut her eyes tightly, trying not to let herself cry.

Deena watched Sam and felt awful to see Sam obviously in pain and not being able to help her. And not even knowing what was going on with her.
