"Why are you where? What do you want?" Sam asked. She got called down to the front office at school. Once she opened the door, she was stunned to see her mom on the other side.
"There's been an emergency with your grandma. She's at the hospital and she doesn't have long. She wants to talk to you. I've talked to your principal and he's let you leave so we can go see her." Sam's mom said. Sam noticed how her mom didn't show any emotions as she talked about her grandma.
Sam didn't want to be around her mom ever again but it was important to her to say goodbye to her grandma, so she didn't regret it in the future.
"I'll go get my stuff." Sam looked at the clock on the wall and knew that it was lunch time in a few minutes so she could tell Deena what was happening so she didn't worry.
Sam went to her locker and took her book bag with homework in it. She then waited at her locker, knowing Deena would meet her there everyday.
"Hey, why do you have your bag?" Deena asked the moment she was close enough to Sam.
"My mom, I know how bad this sounds. But shes in the office and my grandma is in the hospital and doesn't have much longer. So she asked to see me."
"Sam, are you sure you want to go with your mom? You never know what kind of shit she could pull." Deena got a queasy feeling in her stomach the moment Sam brought up her mom.
"It's not like she's going to trap me or something. I don't want to regret saying something to my grandma or denying her from seeing me just because of my mom. We weren't really that close or anything. But she wasn't as psycho as my mom I remember. I'll go to your house right after."
Deena waited a moment as she studied Sam before replying. Sam was right about her grandma, but Sam being near her mom never turned out well.
"Please come home as soon as you can." Deena said, her face still consumed with concern and even fearful for what could happen to Sam.
Sam smiled the moment Deena told her to come home. "I will be home as soon as I can be. You're my home and it's always painful to be away from you. I always come back to you. Every time something happens, I go to you."
Sam leaned in and placed a quick kiss on Deena's lips, not caring about all the other people around them. When she was with Deena, they felt like they had their own world and no one could break them apart.
"I love you, Sam. Be careful. You know how she is. I'll be waiting for you, call if you need anything."
"I love you too. And I will, I promise." Sam kissed Deena quickly again then went to the end of the hallway where the doors where to get out.
She looked back and saw Deena watching her. She waved with a wide smile on her face and Deena waved just as happily back to Sam.
Deena still felt the sick feeling in her stomach as she watched Sam go out the doors. Nothing ever felt okay when Sam's mom was involved. And Sam alone with her mom scared her even more.
Sam has changed and became stronger the moment Sam left her mom behind and believed in herself for the first time. Deena was worried mostly about the Sam kissed Deena without fear and or nervousness in front of the other students at school, and how that strength in Sam could be taken away from her the longer Sam spent with her mom again.
Sam has desperately craved her mom's approval and acceptance her whole life and just because shes been with Deena the past year doesn't make up for the years Sam let her mom control her.
Kate was in the front office to take care of cheer captain business as she watched Sam follow her mom out the front doors towards the parking lot. She felt the same kind of sick feeling Deena had, when she saw Sam with her mom again after all this time.
"Why the fuck did Sam just leave with her mom?" She asked the moment Deena met them at their lunch table.
Deena sighed she glanced at the empty seat Sam would sit in next to her then at Kate. "Her grandmas in the hospital and she doesn't have much time left. So her grandma asked to speak with Sam. Her mom came and got her to take her there."
"And you believe that bullshit?" Simon asked.
"I don't know..I talked to her about it and asked her if she was sure. She said she didn't want to regret saying goodbye to her. You know she was close with her other grandma." Deena looked down at the ring Sam gave her. "I understand, but I'm fucking worried too. She said she would come over to my house the moment she's done or call me."
"If she's not home by 10pm, we need to go look for her." Kate said and Simon and Deena both agreed.
