Tommy POV

The first thing Tommy felt was warmth. He sighed in content, relaxing deeper into the blankets. How he loved being home and in his own bed. He had almost managed to fall back asleep when his brain came to a screeching halt. The last thing he remembered was the bitter cold of the forest. So why-

He bolted upright and quickly began looking around the room. Green walls, clear wooden floors, a wall filled with different types of swords and axes, a small drawn picture highlighting three different people. Where was he? Had he been kidnapped? His breath caught in his throat. He needed to find a way out of here and quickly. Before they realized what he really was.

He threw off the blankets just in time for the door to open. A figure with a green bucket hat paused upon seeing him. "You're awake."

Tommy's heart continued to race.

"I made some soup for you, if you feel up to eating it," he offered, raising the steaming bowl in his hands slightly.

"Who... who are you?" he whispered.

The figure seemed to mentally slap his forehead. "Oh right! My name is Phil. My sons found you out in the blizzard a few days ago. They brought you back here to warm you up." He sighed, "You're lucky they found you. Another hour or two and I wouldn't have been able to bring you back."

Tommy blinked a few times, trying to decipher this new information. There was one thing that didn't make sense. "Why did you save me?" he questioned.

Phil frowned, placing the soup on the dresser. "You needed help."

"But you don't... You don't me."

The man chuckled, "It doesn't matter. I'm willing to give help to anyone in need."

He dwelled on the thought. Was he really worth saving? An itching sensation from his back brought him back to reality. Running a hand over his shoulder blade, he knew this wasn't healthy. He looked back at Phil.

"Are you in pain?" he asked.

Tommy shook his head, "No." But his back continued to burn, his wings desperate to escape.

Phil sighed, running a hand through his hair. "You're an avian, aren't you?"

His heart began to speed up. How could have known? Was it that obvious? Maybe Tommy could deny it, he would never know. But he was terrible at lying and trying to lie to someone who had shown him so much unnecessary kindness would eat him up from the inside. But could he really trust him? Could he really just-

"Woah, woah! Calm down, kid. It's okay, alright?" Phil was by his side in an instant. "I was only asking because of the rashes on your back. I noticed them earlier. It's not healthy for your wings to be in your back for that long.

Tommy's breaths seemed to come out raspier with every breath. "H-how would y-you know?" he had to be a hunter or something. Avians were rare, maybe even nearly extinct. They had been hunted down by greedy travelers, people who would do anything for the weight of a gold coin.

"You're not the only one with wings." Phil stood up, pulling off his green jacket to reveal a pain of black wings. They were reminiscent of a crow. "I would leave them out all the time, of course. But I get sick of knocking things over."

A laugh escaped the blonde at the thought. He could just imagine the man trying to keep everything tidy, putting his favorite dishes and vases away. And just when everything seemed to be in perfect order he would turn just slightly, sending everything into a pool of broken china.

Phil smiled, "There's only so much glue and tape can fix."

When Tommy finally stopped giggling his eyes turned back to Phil's black wings. They were neat and tidy, with every feather in place. He couldn't help but be amazed by how well kept they were. His own wings had never looked like that. Even on the days when he tried his hardest to preen his feathers.
