Tommy POV
It was like they were dancing, one stepping backwards to block while the other stepped forward to meet the blade. The trailed back and forth, periodically switching roles as they went. Techno parried with a more calculated step, never afraid to fall back into a defensive stance. Wilbur, on the other hand, was more impulsive with his face contouring further into anger with every misstep.
The two had been at it for hours, from the break of dusk to the glimmering of the full moon. It was a routine they had fallen into. A few hours of practice with Phil the day before and they were ready to practice their skills after their chores were done.
But despite the grueling hours and lack of sleep, which Tommy despised, they always had an audience.
Little Tommy, barely above the age of seven, was always watching. It started with Tommy sneaking out and following them to the training grounds. He would watch for a few minutes before running back in fear that he would get caught. As time went on, he grew bolder. Minutes bled into hours, and eventually the blonde was there from start to finish.
Tommy couldn't help himself. There was just something so magical about watching them as they fought. That same magic trickled back to the stories their mother would tell Tommy each night. Stories of dragons and knights. Stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Stories that followed a hero that Tommy could only dream of becoming.
But something changed that night. Between Tommy's growing confidence and the revealing light of the full moon, the shadows had seemingly disappeared. The boy had shrugged it off, counting on his siblings' obliviousness not to notice him. They had never noticed him before on full moons, why would they now?
He counted on that fact, not caring too much if he could be seen through the trunks of the trees. All he cared about was getting a good view of the dance. Phil had taught them a completely new style of fighting, one that reflected the skills they had been perfecting over the years. It was a mix of parries and stabs, dissolving into a more defensive line of swordplay.
Techno had gotten the hang of it rather quickly, while Wilbur struggled. He was mixing up the steps and therefore throwing off his balance. And Techno was enjoying it.
"You could actually try, you know? I do like a real challenge."
Wilbur huffed in response, readying his sword once more. He gripped his sword tightly as he began the set again. Parry forward, one step back, and one more stab for good measure. Tommy watched closely, imagining his own hands around that sword. It was the step back that was giving him trouble, mostly because Techno was throwing him off balance.
"That wasn't even close."
Wilbur threw his hands up, causing Techno to duck under his blade. "Is silence too much to ask for?"
Techno shrugged, "Battles aren't meant to be silent."
He scoffed at that. "What battles will we truly see?" He tried the step again, but Techno had stopped fighting. "Face it, Techno. We're learning skills we'll never use. Dad will do everything in his power to prevent us from ever seeing that side of the world."
Tommy frowned, why would he do that? Especially having seen so many battles in his younger years. Phil had fought in a few different wars, usually fighting to protect a nearby village. He had fought for a king only once, vowing to never do it again. He had left those years behind to raise a family. Tommy couldn't understand why Phil would want to keep Techno and Wilbur from pursuing their dreams. Especially in something that sounded so exciting.
Techno's sword was still pointed into the ground. "That doesn't mean we won't use the skills. There may come a day where we have to protect our family. Our parents and Tommy."
