We made it outside the walls. My heart was pounding in my chest.
After a few minutes we were riding by some wrecked abandoned houses.
"From the looks of things, this was a small village..." I mumbled to myself. There were no titans in sight just yet. Erwin hadn't ordered for the formation split yet, so we need to be careful.
Hange was positioned with Erwin directly at the front.
"We've got a ten-metre coming from the left!!" She called out.
We ran past, and I saw two soldiers distracting it. I gasped.
"It's big!" I blurted.
"What'd you expect?" Eld pointed out. My grip on the reins tightened.
"Be straight with me, do you reckon my friends have a chance of beating a titan?" Eren asked.
"Really? I should certainly hope so otherwise what the hell have they been training for? Now listen and listen well. You are a scout now and time is important so-" Oulo bit his tongue. Petra and I couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"That's what you get for flapping your jaw." Petra teased.
We made it away from the inner-city streets. Erwin finally ordered for the formation to take place. We all split into our groups.
It wasn't long until we began to see red smoke signals.
"Titans nearby? So soon?" I murmured. Gunther passed on the signal.
"The right-wing spotters are sure to see a lot of titans. That's their job to let us know so we are alert." Eld explained.
"But we are in the center rank, aren't we safe?" Eren asked.
"Positions don't matter. If the rest of the formation doesn't hold up, then we would have no choice but to fight. Also, abnormals are a pain in the ass. They'll just head straight for the center." Eld added.
"Now I don't feel so good..." I pouted.
"Just keep it together!" Levi called out.
Before long there were multiple red smoke signals everywhere. Suddenly we spotted a green smoke signal. From Erwin himself.
"Right, we're changing course." Levi called out.
Soon a messenger came over.
"A report sir! It appears the right-wings spotters have been wiped out! One of you will need to relay the message down the line!" He explained. Eren and I were shocked. So soon?!
"Petra! You know what to do!" Levi called out.
"Yes sir!" Petra rode off to deliver the message.
"Right-wing...? That's where Armin's positioned..." Eren murmured.
"Armin? But he wasn't on the edge, he was more towards the center, so he should be alright." I reassured him.
"Yeah, you're right."
Suddenly multiple black smoke signals were fired.
"An abnormal?!" Eren blurted.
"And It's too close!" I blurted.
"Fire the smoke signal, Eren!" Levi ordered.
"Yes sir!" Eren fired off the next smoke signal.
"This is a disgrace. A lot of good the formation does if all they do is come in directly." Levi muttered to himself. I rode next to him.
"Will we be alright?" I asked. Levi didn't answer me, which tells me, we'll most likely come face to face with the damn thing.
We ended up turning east, which caught everyone off guard. There was a giant forest up ahead.
"We're going in there? But that's too risky..." I mumbled.
A new order was given out, only the center ranks enter the forest and the rest wait around and stop any titans from entering the forest. But why are we going in here?! What purpose is there? But, Erwin wouldn't make us go straight into the forest if he didn't have a plan in mind.
"What are we supposed to do? The abnormal is coming from the right!" Eren began to panic.
"No... This is different. If it's the same abnormal from the first smoke signal, then something tells me it's letting on more than what we know." I mentioned.
"What do you mean?"
"What I mean is that an abnormal shouldn't have even lasted this long, unless there are multiple of them which I highly doubt. There's a possibility... No..." The truth of the situation was sitting on the tip of my tongue, but I didn't want to believe it.
"Quit whining and take a look around you. These big ass trees make it a perfect environment for 3DM gear. Erwin probably came in here as cover. Take my advice Eren. Calm down and use your head, the best survival tool is your brain." Levi explained, remaining as calm as ever.
"Why would an abnormal head straight for the center rank...? That's too much out of character. If what I think is true, then maybe... could it be after... Eren...?" I mumbled to myself. Eren was too focused to hear me, but I know Levi heard a bit of what I said. I looked around and the rest of the squad looked just as stressed and confused as Eren.
That's not right. They don't know? Does that also mean Levi is clueless?
There was a black smoke signal fired from behind.
"Dammit! It's right behind us!" Oulo yelled.
"Damn thing's been on our ass's since we came in here!" Eld pointed out.
"Blades drawn now! It'll happen in a blink of an eye." Levi ordered, as he drew out his own blades. We all followed. What can I do against a titan? I study them, not fight them.
Suddenly we heard heavy footsteps coming from behind. I turned my head around and saw a solider in mid-air. When all of the sudden, he was crushed by a 14-metre titan. It was so fast!
"Ahh!" I screamed. It crashed through the trees above us.
"Go! Move it!" Levi ordered. Eren looked terrified. It was right on our tails.
"Eren! Hurry it up!" I called out. I knew it. It's not an abnormal. It's a titan shifter! Just like Eren.
