"But you can still fix her, right?!" Dimitri asked me.

"I..."

"No." Levi abruptly spoke. I turned my head to look at him and he had a serious expression on his face, but his eyes expressed a tinge of sadness.

"What?! What do you mean no?!" Dimitri yelled, with sweat dripping down his face.

"Like you were told, there is no cure. Nothing can cure your sister." Levi answered, in a cold tone.

Dimitri clenched his jaw and his fists, as if he was about to lose it.

"Levi! Don't be so cold." I warned.

"What's the difference? You know as much as I do, (y/n). And you know for a fact that's what my mother died of." Levi pointed out.

My eyes widened as the truth hit me. Sohma did tell me that Kuchel was sick with it, and that's why he left because he knew there was nothing he could do, even if he wanted to.

"Your mom died from aids?" Dimitri asked, softening his voice.

Levi nodded.

"She was forced to work in a brothel as well, to support me. To make sure I had food in my belly every day. She knew she was sick but kept it from me, but deep down I knew she wasn't the same. She would refuse to eat meals, so she lost a lot of weight. She had no colour to her face anymore. She slept a lot more and couldn't do chores anymore. And then one day she never woke up again." Levi explained, as he did his best not to let on any emotion.

Dimitri went silent, turning to face his sister again, then running over to her. Dropping to his knees, he wrapped his arms around her and buried his face in her chest.

"No! I won't accept that! I don't care! You can't die!!" Dimitri cried.

I stood back up and looked over at Levi. He took a step forward and gently placed his hand on my lower back.

"What do you want to do?" Levi asked, in a quiet voice. I was silent for a moment as I didn't know what to do. I can't take a boy away from his dying sister, and I can't leave her here to die.

Then I made my decision.

I walked over to the hair and bent down, placing a hand on Dimitri's back.

"I'm sorry, Dimitri. It's true, I can't cure her illness, but that doesn't mean she has to die here." I spoke. Dimitri looked at me with tears covering his cheeks. Grace was even surprised with my words.

"What do you mean?" Grace asked.

"We can still take you to the surface, so you can see the blue sky, feel the grass under your feet. Breathe the fresh air. Watch the sun rise and set each day. Enjoy what days you have left feeling nothing but happiness. You don't have to die down here, cold and alone. I know you have a gentle heart, so you would want your brother to have a better life." I explained, as I grasped her hand gently.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes and a smile on her face. She nodded her head.

"So, you'll come?!" Dimitri asked Grace. She nodded. Dimitri then looked at me with a serious expression.

"What is it?" I wondered.

"Will my sister have food to eat?" Dimitri asked. I nodded.

"You both will. Three meals a day. And you will also have warm beds to sleep in. I promise, you won't have to sleep in the dirt again." I explained.

Grace pushed herself up and wrapped her arms around me. Hearing her gentle sobs in my chest, I stroked her dry hair. Dimitri wrapped his arms around me as well.

"Thank you." Dimitri whispered.

I turned my attention to Levi, as he stood back and watched.

"Now Dimitri, do you know where I can find more kids?" I asked.

Dimitri smiled and nodded.

"Levi, come over here and carry Grace." I requested.

"Tch."

He reluctantly walked over and pulled his hands out of his pockets. I helped Grace up and Levi hoisted her on his back. I took my coat off and put it on her back to keep her warm.

"First thing that's gonna happen is bathing these brats." Levi mentioned.

"Hey! I'm not a brat!" Dimitri yelled, smacking Levi on the arm.

I let out a small snicker.

"Oi, watch it." Levi glared at Dimitri, but his glare never faded.

We all left the dark corner and walked through the streets. Dimitri ran ahead to find the other children.

Eventually we found them, and as expected, they were reluctant to trust us, but we persuaded them. I think the idea of food drew them in. By the end of the day, we had over a dozen children that were willing to come to the surface. I was happy that I could help them live a better life.

We approached the gate and the guard stopped us.

"Hey! Where do you think you're going with all these mongrels?!" Asked the angry guard.

"Taking them to the surface." I answered.

"I don't think so! These brats stay down here!" He yelled, taking a step towards me. Levi went to step forward, but I quickly moved in front of him.

"Oh? Perhaps you haven't heard, it's the Queen's orders that all orphaned children be brought to the surface. So, unless you want to disobey your Queen, you will let us pass." I warned.

The guard looked shocked and was about to say more when the second guard grabbed his shoulder and signalled him to let us pass. He let out a grunt and stepped to the side.

"Fine. Get out of here." He murmured.

"Good choice." I pointed out. We all went forward and climbed the stairs to the surface.

There we could see the sunlight.
