chapter 42

Wednesday, 2nd September:

"Ugh, I can't see bacon anymore.", Teddy complained, pushing the plate away from her. The kids were already playing in Logan's room, much faster at eating than their parents and aunt were, and Leo was strolling around the living room with a balloon in his arms. "Where are you going?", she asked Amelia, who was leaving the room.

"Take them.", the brunette ordered, handing her two pregnancy tests when she came back. "You haven't been yourself in days and you love bacon. I know a pregnant woman when I see one.", she said, scared of being right. "I've been pregnant twice."

"What? I can't be pregnant! I haven't had sex without a condom in years...", her friend argued confused but then remembered something. "But you hadn't had sex with James without a condom either and got pregnant. I'll be right back."

Owen was at a loss for words and just glanced over at his girlfriend in shock. She looked at him for a second before she focused back on her breakfast and picked at it. They had been trying for a week now but if Teddy was actually pregnant, it meant they would stop.

Sitting there in silence waiting for the results felt like an eternity to all three of them. The neurosurgeon looked so sad; it didn't just break her boyfriend's heart but also her colleague's. This had not been the plan.

"Pregnant.", the cardio surgeon informed her friends in defeat. It wasn't that she wasn't happy at all since she had wanted to be a mother too. But the whole situation was kind of crappy, especially because she was dating Tom now.

"I...I'm sorry, I need some fresh air.", Amelia announced and got up, fighting the tears in her eyes. She lifted Leo into her arms and walked out of the room. "Kids, put on your shoes, we'll go play outside.", she decided.

"Maybe it's Tom's?", the trauma surgeon hoped, sighing at the thought of having gotten the wrong woman pregnant. "But if it's not, I'll be here for our baby and we both know that Amelia will too. She just needs some time to adjust."

"Could be. Only an ultrasound will tell, I guess.", the blonde shrugged. "I didn't mean for this to happen, Owen.", she felt guilty. "Maybe you should go talk to her? Or I can try?", she suggested helplessly, but her best friend shook his head.

"Hi, we're here!", Megan, Nathan and Evelyn joined them in the kitchen. The redhead had gotten back together with her ex-boyfriend during the year in which Amelia had been missing and they couldn't be happier since the cardio surgeon had introduced her to his son Farouk and she was now his mom.

"Hey!", her brother tried to remain composed. "Farouk, your cousins are outside with their aunt.", he told his nephew, who beamed as he ran to the backdoor to join them in the garden. "Teddy is pregnant.", he blurted out. "And I need you guys to help me with something. Mom, can you please distract Amelia for at least an hour?"

"Uh, sure honey.", Evelyn agreed, a little overwhelmed by the news. When she walked outside and noticed how sad the brunette looked, her heart broke. "Hi, sweetheart!", she softly greeted her, kissing her forehead.

"Hey...", the neurosurgeon's voice broke. She was pretty sure that either Teddy or Owen had told her about the pregnancy. She was trying very hard not to cry but couldn't hold back anymore and started sobbing.

"It's okay, dear!", the grey-haired woman soothed as she embraced her. "Let it all out and then you can tell me about your pain.", she made a plan, stroking the back of her head.

"We'll take over watching the children for now.", Megan announced when everybody came outside but Owen. "Amelia, please go in.", she said, smiling at her friend, who had calmed down by now but still didn't look happy.

"Okay.", she answered and walked into the house, not sure where her boyfriend was. She just figured he was in the living room and when she looked inside, there were rose petals all over the floor. The redhead was down on one knee, holding up a small box with a ring inside. He was even wearing a suit. "What are you-"

"I love you, Amelia! With everything inside me, I am in love with you! And there have been too many things keeping us apart for over a year. Now there might be another challenge ahead of us, which I am sure we will be able to master too. Because I need you, and there is nothing I want to do without you. I still want to have a baby with you. Even if Teddy is pregnant with my offspring, I still want us to have another baby. And you are going to be a second mom to Teddy's and my child. I am the happiest when I am with you, and I love everything about you. Did you know that you snore sometimes? Because damn, it's freaking annoying and at the same time so cute that I love it too.", Owen pointed out, making her chuckle. "I know you said we can't get married the last time I kinda suggested it. But the truth is, we can, and we should. What is there to wait for? I mean, if marriage is not your thing, then fine. Let's not get married but if you just said it to meet the standards of society, then why the heck would we do that? I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you and only you, Amelia. So, will you do me the honor of marrying me?"

"Yes.", his girlfriend replied as her face lit up. "A thousand times, yes! I finally want to make us official as a couple and to adopt the kids and I absolutely want to change my last name to yours.", she shared, pulling her boyfriend back up to kiss his lips while he put the ring on her finger.
