Amelia: Are you cheating on me, Owen?

The brunette was lying in bed, anxiously waiting for her husband's response. She couldn't get the thought out of her head. She just didn't understand what had made him leave their family that fast.

Owen: What? No!

Owen: Did you read the letter?

Amelia: I'm not sure I want to...

Owen: Please, Amelia. After that, call me if you want. <3

Amelia: Fine...

The neurosurgeon glanced at the sleeping husky on Owen's side of the bed before she grabbed the envelope from her nightstand. It had been laying there for a while now and she just had not been brave enough to open it yet.

Dear Amelia,

since you aren't in the mood to talk to me, understandably so I guess, I figured you might want to read about my excuse. You might still hate me after but maybe you are able to understand a little bit better why I acted the way I did towards you.

I know I am a selfish asshole; you didn't have to tell me. Because the truth is, that when I asked you about your opinion last night, I had already agreed to serve. I got the call and I just said yes. I figured you wouldn't mind, and I didn't think. As you know, there's no way of taking back a yes you said to the military.

I couldn't tell you that I have been that egoistic and...this is why I just went with you hating me. I knew I couldn't find a good apology for it. If I could have undone all of it, I would have. I wouldn't have left. Even if I wanted to be something else than a father and a husband for a moment. I love you and the children so much and I feel bad about leaving.

I hope that when I come back in six months, you are still waiting for me, loving me even. But honestly, I would just hate me too. I am planning on texting you every day and on facetiming you guys every other day. Let me know if that is okay.

Sincerely,

Owen

Amelia sighed as she looked at the display of her phone, where she could see another message from her husband. She was so mad at him, maybe even more than before, but at least he still loved her and the worst-case-scenario of him having an affair was rather unlikely.

Owen: Don't feel obligated to call. I'm sorry for all of it. And if you don't wanna facetime me, have a good night. I really hope you have it in you to forgive me. I love you, babe! <3

"What do you think, El? Are we gonna call him?", she asked the sleeping dog, obviously not receiving an answer. She sighed again, staring at the message, badly wanting to leave him on read. But she remembered the fact, that he was the father of her children. "Hello.", she said once he took the call.

"Hi!", the redhead was much more enthusiastic than she was. "Would you like to...uh, maybe we can talk?", he unsurely suggested. "Without yelling...", he added, hoping not to cross another line.

"I don't know what to say. There is so much going on in my mind...my head feels like it is about to explode, Owen.", his wife replied. "On the one hand, I could kill you. On the other hand, I could still kill you but at least you aren't fucking someone else."

"Woof!", Eleanor woke up upon hearing such a word and complained. She raised her head to stare at her mama as if to scold her for using such bad language when she was in the room trying to get her beauty sleep.

"Sorry, sweetie.", Amelia chose to apologize to the husky and gave her some pets. "Go back to sleep, it's late.", she softly ordered, leaning over to kiss her head. "I mean, where do we go from here? Your first thought should have been to discuss this with me instead of choosing yourself. And although you had already made the decision, I will always feel like my opinion matters less to you than yours, which is quite unfair because I would never do that to you.", she addressed her husband again.

"I don't want you to think that, honey.", the trauma surgeon whined, feeling like trash. "I want you to still trust me. I can just hope that one day you will again.", he shrugged sadly. "I just wanted to protect you when I lied...but I realize how dumb that was."

"Maybe. But for now, you've broken my trust. And by protecting me you made everything worse. You should have been honest the moment you said yes. I don't know how to do this alone, I-", the brunette pointed out when somebody opened the door and walked in.

"Can we sleep in here with you?", Logan asked for himself, Leo, and Layla. Their mother immediately ended the call with their father, so they wouldn't even think about talking to him since it was too late in the evening for that.

"Yes.", the neurosurgeon allowed it and nodded, helping her three-year-old into the bed while his siblings climbed under the sheets by themselves. They took the spots in between their mom and dog, feeling very protected now. "I love you guys."

"We love you too, mama.", her daughter sweetly responded as she closed her eyes again. Amelia knew she couldn't let her children sleep in the bed with her all the time, but right now it did help her feel a little less lonely and she was grateful for them being here.
