"Amelia, Dear, let's talk, please!", Evelyn begged once the brunette came back downstairs after bringing the children to bed. She wasn't dumb and had noticed that her daughter-in-law was mad at her.
"Sure, if you think you can handle it when I explode. Because I will!", the brunette threatened angrily. Her husband had planned to walk Eleanor but now he decided to stay, scared of his wife although he hadn't done anything wrong. He slowly sat down on the couch, ready to step in if he had to. But his mother deserved what she was about to hear.
"Honey, I understand that you're angry...", her mother-in-law tried to continue but got interrupted by the neurosurgeon, who had been bottling it all up during the afternoon and evening to make sure she wouldn't scare off her kids.
"No, no you don't!", Amelia contradicted. "Evelyn, I love you. But what I love most in this world are my children. My smart sassy kids, that love to talk back. But sometimes they get hurt so badly that they need me to handle a situation for them. You destroyed Leo today. And I know that you didn't mean to hurt her, but this is not what she expected to encounter."
"I have never had to deal with something like this before, Sweetheart.", the grey-haired woman tried to reason with her daughter-in-law. "Please sit down, so we can talk about this in piece."
"There's nothing you have to deal with. You're simply supposed to accept your grandchild's identity! I have never had to support my kids in something like this either and I am not saying that all I do is right, but Leo just wants to be Leo and there is nothing wrong with that. She didn't eat lunch today. I left the children with you because I knew they were in good care. And you disappointed me. You knew Leo was hiding and you didn't even try to make her eat. She's a toddler.", the brunette argued.
"You are right, I should have looked for him. But he was throwing such a tantrum and I was alone with the five of them, two of them are babies as you know. That doesn't mean it's okay to neglect Leo, but he had had a big breakfast. None of this killed him.", Evelyn responded.
"DON'T CALL HER HE!", Owen was the one to actually explode, surprising both women. "You're intentionally misgendering our child! She told us what she wanted us to call her today and you keep ignoring that, Mom!", he almost yelled.
"BECAUSE HE WAS BORN A BOY!", his mother defended herself. "Just because we want to be something doesn't automatically turn us into it. Layla wants to be a unicorn, but neither is she one. You know what? The two of you are too angry to have a reasonable conversation about this, so I'm gonna go home and we'll meet up another time. Good night! Bye, Ella."
"You...are a kickass mom, Ames!", the trauma surgeon told his wife, walking towards her and cupping her cheeks to kiss her forehead. "You would go to hell for our children and there's actually nothing sweeter and hotter."
"And you...have a temper.", Amelia joked, making him chuckle. "Just so you know, I would go to hell for you and Ellie too. It's just...you can fight for yourself, and Leo can't. Not really anyway. So, I have to in order to make sure my child is fine."
"I think you saved her today. By accepting Leo for who she is. And honestly, that isn't even something I should praise you for since it's so normal, but you never question our kids. When Logan told us that he's gay, you were perfect. Leo tells us she sometimes wants to be a girl and other times a boy and you are perfect again. That's...I love you!", the redhead informed her.
"I'm trying to be less impulsive but when somebody bothers my babies, the mama bear just jumps out. But for the record, I am grateful you stepped up against your mom with me. You could have lowered your voice but oh well, she'll get over it. I love you too, Babe.", the neurosurgeon replied. "When it comes to my kids, something snaps inside of me. And I just...I will protect them with my life.", she added and started sobbing, the anger finally wearing off and turning into worry.
"I know. Come here, Love!", her husband softly ordered, wrapping is wife into a tight hug. "They are sleeping, so take some me-time. By being such a great mother and wife, you sometimes forget to take care of yourself. I'm gonna walk the Queen and then I'll join you, so make the most of it. There's your favorite kind of chocolate in our closet, sparkling lime water is in the fridge, treat yourself."
"You're amazing.", the brunette sighed happily, pecking his lips before she walked upstairs with said drink, ready to eat some of her favorite chocolate. But as life as a mother predicts, she found Leo in their bed, tossing, and turning. "Hey, my sweet Angel.", she whispered, placing a gentle kiss against the child's forehead after quietly putting the bottle down. She quickly got ready for bed and decided to cuddle with the toddler, who immediately calmed down in her arms. "I know today was a lot for you, but mama's here and I'll protect you."
