"Dr. Shepherd, you're needed in the ER!", nurse Linda told the brunette, who was standing in front of the OR board. "It's really packed today, and the other Dr. Shepherd is off while Dr. Koracick is in the middle of surgery."
"Alright, thanks!", the brunette smiled and made her way downstairs. Linda had warned her about the mess but when she arrived, her head started to spin as her brain filtered a lot of words that triggered her. "Drowning. Gunshot. Kidnapping. Hammer. Blood."
"Amelia?", Owen shouted for the third time, watching his fiancé just stand there before she started to move away and ran off somewhere. "Kepner, do you have this covered for a second?", he questioned, and his friend nodded. "Babe?"
"I'm here.", the neurosurgeon cried in the corner of a supply closet, sitting there in a pile of blood, causing the redhead's eyes to widen. "I got stressed down there and now I am losing our baby.", she sobbed. "I can never have anything nice."
"Let's get you cleaned up and I'll drive you home.", the trauma surgeon said. "I just have to text Megan to cover the pit.", he added. "It's okay, honey. We can try again.", he informed her with tears in his eyes, helping her up.
At home, Amelia just quietly walked into their bedroom and crawled under the covers, breaking Owen's heart. She hadn't really talked to him since the miscarriage, and it had been a whole hour. The last words she had said kept echoing through his mind.
"Hey, you guys are home.", Teddy realized when she walked through the main door. Today was her day off and she had been grocery shopping for the family. "I just saw your car outside.", she told her best friend. "What's wrong?"
"Amelia just had a miscarriage. She's in the bedroom and not talking to me. I think I have to make her go to therapy. Everything that happened to her...she's convinced she cannot have anything nice.", the redhead explained sadly.
"Owen, I'm so sorry.", the blonde sighed. "Can you put those away for me?", she asked, referring to the groceries before she left the kitchen to look after her friend, who was silently crying in bed.
"I lost my baby.", the neurosurgeon mumbled, heartbroken. Her co-worker joined her under the covers to wrap her arms around her and to comfort her. "I wanted this so badly...", she whispered, clearly in pain.
"I'm sorry, Amelia.", her friend sympathized with her, gently stroking her back as she let the brunette cry into her. "Owen thinks you should go to therapy. Or I guess he wants the therapist to come here. Wouldn't that be a good idea?"
"I think so.", Amelia shrugged, still sobbing quietly. "I am a nice person, I don't deserve all this pain.", she said, hoping for it to be true. "Can you ask Owen to make lasagna?", she wondered, watching Teddy nod.
---
"Can I...am I allowed to touch you?", Owen carefully wanted to know from his fiancé. She had said a few words to him during the rest of the day but not much. In front of the children, she had acted normally but he could see how it had drained the energy from her.
"Yeah.", the brunette mumbled. It was dark outside and only the moon was spending some light. Amelia slowly turned around to the trauma surgeon, the tears in her eyes visible. "You get to be sad too, you know?", she let him know.
"I have to make sure you're okay first.", the redhead informed her softly. "I am sad, but I won't let it get to me until I know you're fine.", he added, watching her shuffle to snuggle into him. "You deserve better than to think that you can't have anything nice, babe."
"But it's the truth, Owen. I have been living in Seattle for not even two years and the only three good things to come out of it are you, Layla, and Leo. Everything else felt like hell.", the neurosurgeon sighed. "Did you call Dr. Brato? Will she be here tomorrow?"
"I did.", her fiancé confirmed, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "Are you sure you want me to offer Tom a permanent job and that you want to step away from being a doctor for a while?"
"Uh huh.", Amelia whispered. "I just want to stay home with Leo for a while and be a mom to my three kids.", she explained. "I was pregnant for maybe a week or two and still, it hurts to leave out my fourth child."
"Come here, love!", Owen offered, feeling his heart break again at seeing her so vulnerable. "They are okay. Wherever our is baby now, it's okay.", he promised, hugging her tighter to make her feel protected.
