"Bye, Luna!", Amelia waved at her child. "Lucas, go play.", she told her son, who was clinging to her leg with Eleanor occasionally checking on him with her snout. Naomi had allowed her in the practice as long as she was behaving.
"Dr. Shepherd, with all due respect, we cannot have Lucas here anymore.", the supervisor at the entrance told the doctor, who paused filling out the paper as every morning and glanced up at her in confusion.
"My husband works here, I do too sometimes. It has never been a problem before, why now? And why did you only name one of my twins?", the neurosurgeon questioned, absolutely not aware of what was going on.
"We know that and with Luna it is still not a problem.", her counterpart explained softly. "But Lucas is a special-needs kid. And right now, we are unable to work with him because he is a terror."
"That is just a phase. You've seen him before, he's usually angelic.", the brunette helplessly tried to defend her child. "Also, didn't you learn anything about inclusion and how special-needs kids should be part of regular groups."
"It's a phase nobody here can and wants to work through.", the supervisor answered, ignoring the woman's snarky comment about inclusion. "What your son needs is a children's therapist who can help him and also include him in a group that matches his energy."
"So, you're saying I am taking him with me?", Amelia wanted it confirmed and watched the other woman nod. "As a doctor, I cannot look after my child while I am practicing my job which is why daycare is here to take care of those kids that have surgeons and staff as parents.", she raised her voice.
"Hey, what's going on here?", Jake asked after he had checked on some newborns on the children's floor. "Everything alright?", he added, clearly noticing that it wasn't. "Hi, Buddy!", he smiled at Lucas, who sweetly waved at him, still hugging his mother's leg. "Hi, El."
"They don't wanna watch Lucas anymore, because he is special. According to them, he needs therapy.", the brunette replied upset. "You can't just go!", she almost yelled at her counterpart who had said goodbye just like that and turned away.
"I'll text Addie, maybe she can take him again.", her friend searched for a way to help her and grabbed Eleanor's leash from her while they walked towards the elevators. Amelia was carrying a confused Lucas, who was also happy that his mother was taking him with her.
"That is not the point. I mean, how dare this stranger describe my son as a monster?!", the neurosurgeon wondered, mad. "But Luna gets to stay...is she kidding me? Who gave her that job?"
"Amelia, don't lose your nerves over this right now. Talk to Owen as soon as you can and together you will find a solution.", Jake promised softly. "Of course, that is unfair treatment of a minor but also, now that you know what they think of Lucas, maybe it's better he doesn't stay there."
"I hate them! I won't let Luna stay there anymore either.", Amelia angrily decided as they walked into the practice. The first tear rolled down her cheek. "How can somebody be this rude to a one-year-old?"
"You go get comfortable in your office with these two and I will get Addison anyway and get you guys some snacks.", the gynecologist informed his friend, who sighed before she gratefully nodded.
"Hey, Jake told me.", Addison walked into her sister's office and crouched down for the now excited Lucas to stumble into her arms. "Hey, Honey!", she happily greeted the boy.
"It was painful enough to let my three babies go but finding out that one doesn't get accepted because he might be a little extra work...honestly, I thought Leo would be the one I'd have to worry about. But Mrs. Lucardo promised us that, even though she's never had a child identifying with the female and the male gender at the same time before, she would raise awareness in her class for it.", the brunette shared. "And here we are sitting with Lucas who got excluded from daycare for being different."
"And that is not okay, you're right. But look, is the therapy idea such a bad one?", the redhead slowly wanted to know, not wanting to increase her best friend's anger anymore. "The way the supervisor told you was wrong and not sensitive enough, but maybe you should consider bringing him there."
"I am not against it.", the neurosurgeon admitted. "I am just pissed at the situation this morning. Oh hey, what do you have there, Mister?", she addressed her baby, who walked back into her office, holding Jake's hand with his right one and an ice in his left one.
"Yum.", Lucas answered excitedly and tried to open the package himself, feeling his mama lift him into her lap on the couch and open it for him. It was a small one tasting like orange juice.
"You are my little ice bear, you know that?", Amelia smiled at her kid and kissed his head as she let him eat in peace. "Addie, could you get his bib from the closet over there, please?", she asked her friend. She always had some extra ones at work. "I don't wanna end up in ice cream as well.", she chuckled.
"Yeah.", the one-year-old exclaimed, resting his left cheek against his mother's shoulder, looking very innocent as he made a mess with his snack. "Mama!", he beamed when she kissed his head again.
"Don't ever let anybody compare you to other children. You're worth the same as everyone else.", the brunette pointed out to her son and said bye to her friends for now since they had to go back to work. "You're perfect the way you are. Although your tantrums really are annoying as heck.", she added, making her baby laugh cutely.
