Chapter 6

Matt's POV: As I stood in the waiting room with the crew, I sighed considering I was going to have to have an unpleasant talk with Gabby. She was crazy in thinking I would be okay with her bringing the kids to the scene. I love her but right now, I need to work. They can come later. That's when I saw her and Stella arrive. "Matt!" I then walked over to her and went to hug Stella. "Hey, he's in the ER just getting checked. He's going to be fine." Stella nodded and agreed as she held Stephen close to her. "Can I go in an see him or..." I nodded. "Go ahead."

Stella then went to walk away to see Severide when I looked at Gabby. "Hey Hermann, do me a favor and watch the kids? I need to speak with my PIC. Alone!" Gabby then stared at me and nodded. Meanwhile Hermann looked at me a bit confused. I just sighed and basically begged him. "C'mon kids, come hang out with your uncles and aunts for a minute." He then went to grab the stroller and brought the kids towards the crew. Meanwhile, I grabbed Gabby's hand and led her just outside the ER in between the two doors. "Matt, just take a breath okay?"

I sighed and looked at her. "Listen Gabby, you really think I want to see my kids at the scene of a fire? I already have nightmares about you and Matteo being in that fire at our first apartment. Us having to escape. Babe, I am Chief now. So please, unless you are working on Ambo...you are not to be anywhere near my scenes." Gabby then stared at me. "Matt, he wanted to..." I just shook my head. "Gabby! This is not the time to joke around. I have men to take care. They all have families to get home to. You really think I want to be distracted? What if Matteo got out?"

I sighed and just took a breath as I went to hug her. "Gabby, I'm sorry okay? I didn't mean to yell." Gabby nodded and understood as she held me close. "How's Severide?" I sighed and looked at her. "I haven't really paid attention to that. I have been racking my brain how to talk to you about this without making you think that I am going to put the job first. But right now, I need to. Gabby...it's my first day and I already have a firefighter...an officer and my best friend in the hospital. I don't want to blame you okay but you need to just stay away for now. Please!"

Gabby just nodded and agreed with me. I then went to grab her neck and went to kiss her softly. "Listen, I love you Gabby but you need to let me do my job okay? I love you and really want to be with the kids. Believe me when I say that. But right now, I need to be the chief of Firehouse 51. I promise babe, just let me get through the first few days." Gabby sighed and agreed. "You mad at me?" I sighed and just rubbed her hand. "Yeah a little. You brought the kids to an active fire scene. Gabby, what the hell was that move? Please just promise it won't happen again."

She nodded and agreed with me. "Listen, I need to go back to work. Can we just table this and promise me you won't hold this against me. I am going to be staying overnight at the firehouse tonight." Gabby just stared at me. "Matt..." I sighed. "Gabby, it's my first night as Chief. I'll call okay? Please, I need to be there since Severide is out! I'll be home in the morning before the kids even wake up. I promise. And we can video chat. Gabby just give me time okay?" Gabby sighed and agreed with me. "Fine. Just stay safe." I nodded and agreed before kissing her again. "I will."

Gabby then let me go. We then walked back into the ER lobby when I saw Stella there. "Gabby, can you stay here with Stella you think? Just report back to us." I then looked at everybody. "Guys, I want to say this. Normally we would stay. I get it's Severide and I hate to say this. But...I have to make this decision as the youngest Chief in CFD. Right now, I need to prove myself. So Hermann, get your crew back to the firehouse. Cruz, you're acting Squad Lieutenant. Back to firehouse everybody." They then all nodded and agreed before going to leave. 

I then went to look at the kids and Gabby one last time. "Hi guys. Daddy needs to go back to work okay? I will talk to you guys tonight okay?" I then went to kiss them all. "Love you guys." Matt then smiled at me. "Love you papa." I smiled and nodded before walking over to Gabby. She then got up and looked at me. "Listen, I am sorry about the yelling. I just got scared. Please just not again okay?" Gabby nodded and went to hug me. "I promise. We'll talk later. Forgive me?" I nodded and smiled. "Forgive me for yelling?" She nodded before kissing me.

"Stay safe. I'll call you later. Maybe you can come for supper. We still doing that?"  Gabby nodded and agreed. "I'll be there, I promise." I smiled when she said that, I gave her one last kiss before letting her go. Turning around to take one last glance at her and the kids, I smiled as she went to sit with Stella. Meanwhile, I went to go outside so I could make my way back to the firehouse with my men.

Once Matt has left:
Gabby's POV: Once Matt left to go back to work, I took a few breaths. We were going to be fine. Anyways, I get why he was stressed. I was there with the kids and it was also his first day as chief. I wasn't going to hold it against him. Now, let's go find the waiting room so that I can give Stella my support. "Hey girl, want some company?" Stella nodded and agreed. "Of course." I smiled as I went to grab her hand while looking at the kids. "Matteo, here...want the iPad?" Matteo nodded and agreed as I went to get my iPad out of my purse to give it to him. He then went to sit down and played with it while I spent some time with Stella.
