Chapter 156

A Couple Hours Later - 8 PM Shift Change:
Matt's POV: As I stood on the apparatus floor at shift change, I smiled at Severide as I looked at the babies in their stroller. "So, you and Stella are headed home too?" Severide nodded. "Yeah, I like to head home now thanks to the stuff you set up." I smiled. "I just needed to get out of here and take a breather after all the shit that went down. Between the fire at the place where I said goodbye and then the stuff with Lee Henry, I am just glad we have a night Chief." He laughed and agreed when I saw my night chief come in. I saw it was Chief Walker.

"Chief Walker, you are doing the night shift?" Walker then walked up to me and nodded. "Yes. I am just here tonight. The other one had a family emergency. Taking advantage of the 12 hour shifts over 2 days I guess?" I sighed. "A lot of emotions today. We have some calls that brought back some not too pleasant memories. And some about us with Boden honestly. Having not been here when he died...that was really hard on me. Having Chief refer to me instead of him at those places where we had amazing fires. Sorry, I know that sounds wrong."

Walker then laughed and nodded. "Hey, I get it. You mean those fires that give you medals and stuff." I agreed. "Yeah. Warehouse fire. Just being there was hard. Plus, if I can sleep in my own bed for the night...then I am going to do it. It's just me, Gabby and the babies tonight. Matteo is at his grandmother's place for the next 2 nights and we are alone. So, I am going to get going." That's when I saw Gabby come out after going to the washroom. "Well, if it isn't Gabriela Dawson. You going back to Ambo or Fire?" Gabby then laughed. "Ambo."

Gabby then smiled as she walked up to me. "Let's get going. I want to get the kids to bed and then we can relax. You need rest before shift tomorrow." I then went to look at Walker. "Oh, can you get me a new captain for tomorrow? I need a replacement for Truck 81. I want Hermann to stay out. I already spoke with him and agreed." Walker agreed. "You can take lead on it please. Do your dual role as Captain and Chief." I then turned to look at Gabby. "That okay?"

Gabby then nodded. "Just stay out of the fire." I then smiled. "I am going to be riding in the truck then. That'll be cool." Gabby laughed and agreed with me when I said that. "Listen, can we just head home? I already packed everything. The babies have been fed and are changed and ready for bed. So, can we head home?" I nodded and agreed. "See you in the morning Severide." Severide nodded and agreed as me and Gabby walked away together. "What we doing tonight since it's still early." Gabby then smiled at me. "Maybe a bath instead of a shower tomorrow."

I smiled and liked the idea of that. "Maybe." I then went to kiss her head as we left to go home.
