Chapter 15

Matt's POV: Once I finally made my way to my office, I sighed when I saw I was a few minutes late. Sitting down in my bed, I decided to change into my sweats because I had this feeling I was going to be good for a while. Once that was done, I went to grab my phone and called Gabby. She answered right away and smiled. "Hey, I'm sorry. I know, I am a bit late. Got talking to Hermann and stuff." Gabby laughed and smiled. "It's okay Matt. You're Chief. Stuff happens." I sighed and agreed. "Just talked to him about Boden. He says that he knew it was his time. So, he put my name forward as his replacement because he knew that he was going soon."

Gabby just stared at me and seemed to be shocked by that news. "Oh wow, that's news." I nodded and sighed. "Listen, we can talk about it in the morning okay? I am going to try and sneak into bed with you. Now, where are my little ones? Daddy wants to say goodnight before he hits the hay too. I want to rest in case we get a late night call." Gabby nodded and agreed as she went to point to phone to Matteo and Ella. "These ones are fast asleep." I smiled when I saw that. "In my spot." Gabby then turned the camera back to herself. "Wally is in his crib." I smiled.

"So, in the morning...I am going to have to sneak into bed with you unless you kick the other two into their rooms?" Gabby laughed and smiled when I said that. "What time are you coming home?" I smiled at her. "I am coming right when I wake up. Shift Change." Gabby smiled and liked the sound of that. "Then you can make Matteo breakfast. He's staying here tomorrow." I smiled and nodded. "Good, because I want to thank him for the card he sent me." Gabby smiled and blushed when I said that. "You like that stuff I sent you tonight?" I smiled and nodded. "Yes."

Gabby smiled when I said that. "So listen, I wasn't going to ask until tomorrow but...what did Walker say about you continuing to work shift schedule." I nodded and smiled. "He's okay with it. He's going to get a Deputy Chief (DC) in here for me on the days when I am off shift. Walker and the DC understands that we have young kids and that I need to be home to help you raise them. I refuse to be an absent father. That has already been cleared up so, don't worry about it Gabby. I am going to be doing shift work again so that we can be together as much as possible."

Gabby smiled when I said that and then looked down at Matteo who started to wake up. "Mama, who are you talking to?" I then smiled at her. "Let me say goodnight Gabby." Gabby then moved to give Matteo the phone. "Hey buddy. How was your day?" Matteo smiled at me. "Good, me and grandma played in the snow." I smiled when he said that. "We can do that tomorrow together okay bud. But right now, how about you do your mom a favor and go sleep in your big boy bed?" Matteo nodded and agreed. He then went to kiss her softly. "Night mama."

Gabby smiled when he said that. "Night Matteo. Go to sleep now." He then went to walk away to bed. Turning to look at me, Gabby smiled. "Thank you. One less kid in bed." I then laughed. "I didn't just do it for you. Last time I checked, he was in my spot for tomorrow. However, he is going to be joining us in bed. I am positive." Gabby smiled when I said that. "I wouldn't have it any other way though. This is our dream Matt. I mean, except for Boden having died." I sighed when she said that. "Still can't believe he didn't call me. Had he told me, I would've...."

Gabby understood what I meant. "Matt, of course I would've let you go say goodbye in person. I had Antonio with me down there." I nodded and understood. "I was just scared to not be there for the birth of our kids. I almost missed Matteo's. I didn't want that to be the case again." Gabby smiled and agreed. "Now listen, you get some rest okay? In case you know..." I agreed and smiled. "I love you Gabby. Have a good night. See you in the morning." Gabby smiled and nodded as she went to end the call. 

I then did the same and smiled as I thought about my family. After thinking about them for a bit, I went to plug in my phone before getting my book out. I decided to read for a little bit before bed considering it always helped me fall asleep last time I worked here. Let's hope it does again because I am always thinking of my family right now.
