Chapter 64

Matt's POV: As we made our way downstairs after meeting with Grissom, I smiled when we ran into Hermann who was already waiting for us. Meanwhile, Severide was still struggling to put on his new pins. Turning to look at him, I smiled. "Here, let me help you." Severide nodded and agreed as I went to put his pins on. "Congratulations friend. Invite Stella to the house for lunch okay. We are going to order in and celebrate. The promotion will be this summer." That's when I heard Hermann walk over to us. "What's this? What's with the white shirt Severide?"

I smiled as I looked at Hermann. "You are looking at the newest Squad Captain. Grissom did it for him as a late wedding gift/baby gift." That's when I got a call from Gabby, having told her about it already. Answering it, I smiled. "Why hello there." Gabby then laughed. "Yeah, hi. Is it true? Is it now Captain Kelly Severide?" I laughed and agreed. "Want to speak to the newest captain?" Gabby then said yes. "Here Severide, someone wants to say congratulations." Putting it on speaker, Severide agreed and went to speak first. "Hi babe." Gabby then laughed. "Gabby."

He then looked at me and went to apologize. "I am so sorry Matt, forgive me." I nodded and understood as I went to rub his back. "It's okay, you thought it was Stella. No promises on Gabby texting Stella and saying you called her babe." Severide then went to talk to Gabby. "Don't you dare." Gabby then laughed. "Sorry, already did." That's when Severide got a call from Stella. He then looked at me. "Add me to the call and I will merge our calls." I nodded and agreed as he picked up on speaker. "Hey babe." Stella then got mad at him. "You called Gabby babe!" 

I then merged the calls and Gabby commented, us both putting our phones to our ears (off speaker). "Yeah, he did. He thought it was you considering Matt sent a picture. Wait, did you send it to Stella yet Matt?" I laughed. "Not my news to tell my wife." Severide then nodded. "Stella, you are speaking to the new Squad Captain Severide." Stella then yelled. "WHAT! You already did your exam?" I laughed. "No, he promoted him as a wedding/new baby gift. So, he doesn't have to write an exam anymore. That's good, more time with you and Stephen."

Stella agreed. "Listen Severide, you known Stephen is still tired and young. Think we can celebrate this tomorrow or maybe I can just stop in for supper? Gabby can you come?" Gabby sighed. "No, I am tired. Staying home. However, I send my wishes through Matt." I agreed. "Of course. I promise Gabby, I am coming home tonight to say goodnight to the kids okay? But right now, we have to go speak to our candidates." Both the wives agreed. "Of course." Gabby then asked me to stay on. "Can you stay on for a minute Matt?" I agreed. "Sure, be a minute guys."

Severide and Hermann agreed before walking away, with Severide hanging up. "Everything okay Gabby?" Gabby then sighed. "I am just tired. My mom is here. So, just don't get scared if I don't answer okay? I asked my mom to watch the kids while I take a nap. I need rest." I agreed. "Yeah, you do." I then moved to lean against the wall and sighed. "You are still recovering from giving birth. Listen, I will try and come home for the night. But, it means I am going to have to do another shift tomorrow. You okay with that? What would Matteo think about it?"

Gabby sighed when I asked that. "I will talk to him and let you know when you are home. But don't commit to anything yet okay? Let's just see how busy of a day it is at the firehouse. My mom is here and I can always call your mom right?" I agreed. "I'll do it for you okay? But listen, if you aren't feeling good tonight...I don't care whether you want me to stay at the house or not, I will come. I am your husband first. So, just keep me updated later on how you feel." Gabby agreed. "Of course. I love you Matt. Have a good day." I agreed and smiled. "Love you too."

I then went to hang up and walked back over to Hermann and Severide who were waiting for me. "So, I might not be at the firehouse overnight. Gabby says she doesn't feel good. So, I might do 9 to 9, go home overnight and then do 9 to 9 tomorrow." Hermann looked at me and nodded. "Okay, that works...but then are we on different shifts afterwards?" I shook my head. "No, I will be in Monday." They both agreed and nodded. "Now, how about us boys go do some scouting. Well, you boys do scouting. I have to talk to the candidates. C'mon Captains Hermann and Severide."

Severide laughed when I said that, seemingly happy to be a Captain now.
