Matt's POV: After finishing up with my e-mails, I came out to see Gabby laughing with our friends while holding Ella in her arms. That's when Ella saw me and smiled. "Yeah, you see daddy don't you sweetie?" Gabby then turned to look at me and smiled. "You want to hold her?" I nodded and then bent down to pick her up. "Hi beautiful girl." Moving to sit next to her, I smiled as I went to put her in my lap. "So, how is everybody dealing with this?" Gabby then went to grab my hand and smiled. "Better than expected." We all nodded and agreed. Hermann then spoke to me. "She has only been in when you are here anyways. She's been sick for a while."
I then sighed and nodded, understanding. "Of course. I just hope I didn't push her to stay." Hermann shook his head when I heard Lee Henry speak to us. "Someone want food?" I then looked at him and smiled. "Chief and wife first please." Lee Henry agreed as he went to make us some plates. He then carried them over to us and smiled. "That girl of yours is adorable Chief." I agreed and smiled at him. "Eat bud. She's going to be here for a while. Once you've finished eating...I am going to take you on a tour of the trucks. I'll show you the one you'll work on."
Severide then looked at me. "You sure that you don't want me to do that considering he is my candidate Matt?" I turned to look at him and smiled. "That sounds great. By the way, how's my nephew this morning?" Stella then laughed. "Great. I brought his crib if I have to stay the night." I then turned to look at Gabby. "Is that why you brought the cribs?" Gabby smiled and nodded. "Just in case. I know you say 8 to 8 but...fires can run late. If the kids are asleep, we can stay and you can keep working the 24 hour shift." I agreed and nodded while turning to look at Severide. "What about you Severide, you went home last night...staying the night with Stella?"
I then went to eat a bit of my food and looked up at Lee Henry. "Holy! Coffin, this is delicious. No way you got your culinary skills from your father." Hermann then turned to look at me and laughed. "Haha, funny Matt." I then looked at him and smiled. Lee Henry then finished giving everybody plates and walked over to sit with me. "Dad, I am going to talk to chief okay?" Hermann nodded and agreed as Lee Henry came to sit with me. "I mean, if that's okay with you." Gabby smiled and nodded. "Of course Lee Henry, sit down. I want to know who your instructors are. They might be the same as mine." Lee Henry nodded and smiled. "They all remember you."
Gabby laughed and agreed. "Honestly, I was one of the best in my class. Helped that I had a firefighter fiancé." Gabby then went to grab my hand and smiled at me while looking at Ella. Wrapping my arm around Ella, I went to kiss the top of her head before going to take a bite of my food again. "Now listen Lee Henry, I know I said I want you to just stay here but...when your gear is here, I want you to start coming out. Just to practice putting the gear on. Sure, you can do it at the academy but, it's different when you are rushed." Hermann then looked at me.
"I like the idea. Basically, take everything he learned from the academy and try and put it into use here at the firehouse." I smiled and agreed with him. "By the way everybody...I am going to tell you that today is our first drill day under my leadership." Severide then groaned as he looked at me. "Seriously man?" I then looked at him. "Severide, keep talking and you won't get paternity leave when Stella comes back. You can take it once she's back at work if you want." Severide nodded and liked that idea. "Coffin, finish eating and then we are doing the tour of the squad truck. And you are going to practice with your gear. That includes your jacket we have."
Hermann then looked at me. "You got it already?" I smiled and agreed. "I ordered it with Cindy's maiden name the minute we spoke about it." Hermann nodded and agreed. "Perfect. Now, how about we start talking about your family. Who's the worst baby sleep wise. Little miss Ella or Boden Jr." Looking at Hermann, I smiled when he gave Wally the nickname of 'Boden Jr.' "I like the nickname first. And honestly, we got lucky. Instead, Matteo is worse. He wakes up in the middle of the night. He has to tell us when he has to go to the washroom."
Gabby turned to look at me and nodded. "I hate it sometimes. But then again, I am happy just because we have him. It's a catch 22 type situation. You know, because of all that history." I went to grab Gabby's hand and just rubbed it as we held each other close. That's when I saw that Lee Henry was done. "Chief, I'm done eating." I nodded and agreed. "Gabby, how about you offer one of our friends a chance to hold the kids? I need to take Candidate Coffin on a quick tour of the firehouse. Unless Hermann wants to do it." Hermann laughed and agreed. "C'mon Lee Henry."
He then got up and was about to take Lee Henry on a tour when the bells went off. 'Truck 81, Squad 3, Engine 51...Fire at Lakeshore Hospital.' I then got nervous when I heard that because that was where Hallie used to work. I then got up and looked at Gabby. "Stay safe, stay calm." I nodded. "Love you." I then went to kiss her. "Coffin, you can sit in my truck while you observe. I mean, is that okay Hermann?" Hermann looked at me as he ran out. "Your choice chief. Just don't let him go into fires." Lee Henry nodded as I went to walk away. "Gabby, stay here!"
Gabby nodded and agreed as I ran out with the crew to go out to the hospital.
