Chapter 87

Matt's POV: Once I finished taking Matteo to the bathroom, I came out to see Gabby sitting with everybody in the common room. Looking at her, I could tell she was a dehydrated and that she probably pushed herself too much. I decided to switch into husband mode for a while as I looked at Matteo. "Hey Matteo, how about you go talk to Uncle Hermann about the last fire." Matteo nodded and agreed. "Okay papa." He then ran away to go talk to Hermann. Meanwhile, I went to grab a pick cup of water while standing next to Lee Henry who was making a sandwich. "Good job today eh candidate. That was a great start to your career."

Turning to look at me, he smiled. "Thanks captain." Filling up the glass of water, I went to rub his back before walking over to Gabby. "Here, you might want to drink this." Gabby then looked up at me while holding both of the babies in her arms. "Thanks, can you take Wally? I want some Ella time right now." I laughed and agreed as I went to grab Wally from her and put him in my lap. "By the way, attention everybody. I wanted to say great job on the last call. That was my first call with Lee Henry on scene and you all worked great together. If you have any feedback about whether you are okay with what Lee Henry did on the call today, now is the time to speak."

Mouch sighed as he turned to look at Hermann. "Can I speak freely without retribution?" Hermann nodded and agreed. Mouch then looked at me. "Being completely honest, I have mixed feelings. I mean, the help we get from him and the hoses is great. But...I can tell that Hermann always has him in the back of his mind when he's working. And this is nothing against your leadership Hermann but...when I am in a fire, I need you to think about your men first, not your son. I know it's hard but...I am just worried. Not only for my safety but your sanity. You positive that this is the best idea having you both at the same house Hermann?" 

I sighed and knew that this would come out eventually. "I get what you are saying Mouch. But think about it this way...you've seen me work here for years right?" Mouch nodded and agreed. "And me and Gabby have been married basically almost 5 years now. I have kids here at the firehouse and I am not distracted when I am on scene. And Mouch, may I remind you that I am also there. Lee Henry may be a candidate to one of the two firehouse captains on paper but...I am really overseeing him considering he is outside. And believe me, he is not allowed in the buildings. I watched Hermann and he did it flawlessly." Mouch nodded and agreed.

I then turned to look at Severide. "Hey Severide, what do you think? I mean, if you don't mind joining the conversation instead of being in awe over your son right now." We all laughed when I said that and Severide smiled. "From having been on the scene and watching Hermann inside the fire, he wasn't distracted at all. He was in the zone. However, I am reserving my final decision until Lee Henry actually goes into a fire with us. That's why he is my squad candidate. That's another thing...I heard rumors about him thinking about changing to Truck. Then, I have to say this...no way in hell am I going to be okay with having him on truck. Hermann here isn't as calm when it comes to having the people he loves in harm's way."

Gabby then laughed when he said that. "You've got to be kidding me Severide. Matt is just as emotional when it comes to the people he loves being on scene. It's something I never want him to change...but that doesn't mean I am okay with hearing goodbye on scene." I nodded and agreed as I went to grab her hand. "I promise, never again." Gabby smiled and agreed when I said that. That's when I started to feel Wally snuggle up to me. Kissing the top of his head, I smiled when I started to hear Voight walk into the firehouse. "Chief Casey. Care to explain why some of my men were called out to your scene today?" I sighed and looked at him. "Voight, it was for crowd control. It was horrible."

He just sighed and nodded. "By the way, I need to talk to you guys in private. I have this court thing that Jesse gave me." I then got scared. "What's wrong?" I went to grab Gabby's hand and looked at her. "Just come with me, it's private." We both nodded and then got up. "Guys, can you watch the kids?" Everybody nodded and agreed as me and Gabby both got up so that we could go talk to Voight in my office.
