Chapter 77

Matt's POV: As I arrived at Lakeshore Hospital, I looked at the hospital and took a deep breath. This place has a lot of memories...both good and bad. This was where my late ex-fiancé (Hallie) was a resident until her death. It was also where my nephew (Matteo) was taken when he was kidnapped (for the second time) a few years earlier. Getting out of the truck, I looked at Lee Henry and saw him get out with his jacket. "You stay on my hip!" That's when I saw Hermann get out and look at his son. "Hermann, get to work." That's when Severide arrived with Squad and walked over to me. "Matt, where you want us?" I looked at him. "2 minute sweep. Then out!"

Severide nodded and agreed as he went to grab his crew. Feeling Lee Henry on my hip, I looked at him. "Stay back at bit okay bud? This is not the academy. This is a real fire." He nodded and agreed as he backed up. I then looked around and decided to radio. "Chief Casey to dispatch." Dispatch then responded. "Go ahead chief." I then went to reply. "Backup requested at the old Lakeshore Hospital. We are on the side of the lake." Dispatch then replied. "Engine or Truck?" I then sighed. "Both, we need man power. It's on all ends. Extra ambos please as well." Dispatch then agreed when I saw Lee Henry walk over to the truck. "Candidate!"

I then watched as he went to get in the truck. He then looked at me as he watched from the safety of the truck. I then agreed and  looked at him. "Stay there!" Lee Henry then looked at me and agreed. Hermann then walked over to speak to me. "I want to vent the roof and get water at the top. That okay?" I nodded. "Yes but, you put Lee Henry in the truck?" Hermann sighed. "Sorry chief, I got scared. This is big and no offence but, you are going to have mixed emotions. Had to overrule you when it came to my son okay?" I nodded and understood. "I get it, I am a dad. Good job parking the truck so he can see." Hermann nodded and ran away. 

I then walked over to Lee Henry to speak to him. "You sit in there during every fire okay? But you travel with me. Understood?" Lee Henry nodded and just watched. That's when I noticed that there was someone at the top of the building. I then radioed to Severide. "Severide, where are you inside the building?" Severide then radioed back. "Floor 2, Wing B." I then tried to remember where that was compared to where the guy was. "There's someone on the roof. Can you get up there?" That's when I saw who it was. It was my nephew Diego "Oh my god. He was exploring here again wasn't he?" That's when I saw CPD walk over. I saw it was Antonio. "Oh no."

Antonio walked up to me. "I've been assigned all of your fires. What do we have?" I then sighed and looked at him. "Antonio, you are going to want to sit down for this but...Diego is on the roof." Antonio then stared at me. "WHAT!" I sighed and then went to point to him. Antonio then stood there and just stared in shock. "Call Laura and get me Jay. You are staying back." Antonio agreed as he walked away to call Laura and get Jay. "Wait, do I tell Gabby?" I turned to look at him and shook my head. "I will go back to the firehouse and get her when we're done. WE will come see you without the kids. They are all at the firehouse. Oh and I get to speak to him too."

Antonio nodded and agreed as he went to call Laura and get Jay for me. Meanwhile, I heard Severide. "Chief, can we get the aerial up here or is it too high?" I then thought about it and turned to look at Hermann. "Hermann, get the aerial and let me go up." Hermann then stared at me. "What?" I then sighed and walked over. "I am not going into the fire. But, that's my nephew up there. Gabby will understand." I then went to grab a mask just in case. I then turned to look at Antonio. "This doesn't get back to Gabby. You do not tell her that I did this for you. is that understood!" Antonio nodded and agreed, knowing that he would rather I go up.

Putting my mask on, I then looked at Hermann. "Hermann, I am going up but staying. You keep the fires down. Get the ambo ready to go. Antonio, get in the ambulance!" Antonio agreed and went to get into the ambulance. I then went to climb the aerial so that I could go get Diego from Severide. Once I was up, Severide looked at me. "Gabby is going to kill you." I then stared at him. "I was dead either way. Whether I came up or got her nephew hurt. I would rather just get in trouble with her instead of her and her brother for not doing everything I could to save him!" I then looked at Diego while picking him up and putting him on my back. "You holding tight?"

Diego agreed as I started to carry him down on his back. "You realize you are a dead man right Diego?" Diego agreed. "Sorry uncle Matt." I then sighed as I went to carry him down the aerial. "Your father is riding in the ambulance with you so be ready to get in trouble." He agreed and then went to just hold me. Quickly making my way down the aerial, I set him down on the ground and saw Antonio run over to him. He then hugged him and got scared. "What were you thinking?" Diego then sighed. "I was bored. And I had spare time." He then shook his head and went to bring him into the ambulance. "You're grounded!" He nodded and sighed as he got in.

Meanwhile, I got back to work. "Okay everybody! They are gone so back to work. Hermann, your cannons ready?" Hermann agreed. I then grabbed my radio. "Is everybody out of the hospital." I then heard back from everybody. "All clear chief." I agreed. "Then open the water cannons and then clean this up boys." We all agreed and went to hit the fire with water. Meanwhile, I decided to walk over to Herman. "You got this under control? I am going to drop Lee Henry off at the firehouse and get Gabby to the hospital for a bit." Hermann shook his head. "I got Lee Henry. Go get Gabby and just visit your nephew for a bit." I agreed and nodded. 

I then went to get in my car so that I could go call Gabby. Leaving the scene, I went to call her. She answered right away. "Okay, you are not going to like this but...I didn't go into the building." Gabby then got mad. "You did something close to fire." I sighed. "Diego was at the scene. He was at the top of the hospital waiving his arms." Gabby then got scared. "Is he okay?" I sighed. "Antonio was here and went with him to the hospital. I am on my way back to the house. Can you get the kids in the van and we will leave right when I get there and take off my gear?" Gabby agreed. "Of course. See you in a minute and you aren't in trouble okay? It was Diego." I agreed. "Thanks, I knew you would understand. See you in a minute."

I then went to hang up with Gabby and sighed as I prepared to go get her at the firehouse.
